With only one episode remaining before the end of Dutton Ranch Season 1, one seemingly simple moment from Episode 8 has become the biggest talking point among fans. According to actor Juan Pablo Raba, the phone call Joaquin makes in the closing minutes of the penultimate episode is far more than a plea for help—it is a decision that will permanently alter the lives of everyone involved.

Speaking to TVLine, Raba described the moment in dramatic terms, saying that Joaquin fully understands the devastating consequences of dialing that number.

“He knows that making that call will change everyone’s life, just one phone call,” Raba explained.

The actor went even further, comparing Joaquin’s decision to unleashing a catastrophic weapon.

“It’s like pressing a nuke. You know everything’s going to end, but you don’t see any other way of doing it.”

Those comments have only intensified anticipation for Episode 9, “El Padrino,” which premieres on July 3, 2026.

The road to that phone call began after another crushing defeat for Joaquin. Still devastated that Beulah chose Rob-Will Jackson—rather than him—to lead the 10 Petal Ranch, Joaquin attempted one final strategy. He approached Sheriff Wade and revealed that Rob-Will had killed Wes, even handing over the alleged murder weapon in hopes of securing an arrest.

But the plan quickly fell apart.

Without knowing where Wes’ body was buried, Joaquin lacked the evidence needed to convince the sheriff to act. Wade dismissed the accusation, leaving Joaquin with no legal path to stop Rob-Will from taking control of the ranch.

Frustrated and emotionally broken, Joaquin was later shown screaming in a cemetery before making the one decision he had tried to avoid all season.

He called his father.

That father is Mariano Reyes, the man longtime viewers will recognize from the season’s flashback storyline involving Beulah’s younger years. Mariano was the one who handed Joaquin over to Beulah after his son had “gotten on the wrong side of the law,” a complicated family history that has remained largely unexplored throughout the season.

According to Raba, making that call represents one of the darkest moments of Joaquin’s life.

“Joaquin has been solving problems all his life—that’s what he does,” the actor said. “So to have to make that call is probably the second biggest heartbreak that he has.”

Raba revealed that Joaquin’s greatest emotional wound came when Beulah denied him leadership of the ranch, while being forced to seek help from Mariano ranks as his second biggest heartbreak.

Rather than viewing the phone call as a victory, Joaquin sees it as an admission of defeat.

Even more ominously, Raba suggested that Joaquin immediately realizes he has set irreversible events in motion.

Every second after the call, Joaquin understands that whatever follows will ultimately be his responsibility. He knows innocent people could suffer, relationships could be destroyed, and violence may become unavoidable. Yet, in his mind, there is simply no alternative left.

Those comments strongly suggest that Mariano Reyes’ arrival in the Season 1 finale will dramatically raise the stakes.

The episode title, “El Padrino” (“The Godfather”), already points directly to Mariano’s long-awaited appearance. Promotional material indicates that his arrival could transform what began as a ranch dispute into a much larger conflict involving organized crime and cross-border operations.

At the same time, Beth Dutton and Rip Wheeler will be forced to confront what the official synopsis describes as “a danger that threatens everything.” With tensions surrounding the cattle-smuggling operation already at a breaking point, Mariano’s entrance could trigger the explosive showdown that has been building throughout the season.

Whether Joaquin ultimately regrets making that call remains to be seen. But based on Juan Pablo Raba’s comments, one thing is already clear: the decision was never made out of confidence or ambition.

It was made out of desperation.
