After years of dominating television with the ever-expanding Yellowstone universe, Taylor Sheridan is officially heading back to Hollywood’s biggest stage. The Oscar-nominated writer has announced his first original feature film projects in five years, marking a major return to the big screen while continuing to oversee one of television’s most successful franchises.

On Sunday, Bosque Ranch Productions and 101 Studios confirmed they have acquired two original screenplays written by Sheridan, titled Visalia and Capture the Flag. The projects represent his first feature film scripts since 2021 and his most significant move back into cinema after dedicating much of the past several years to building his television empire.

Both films originated from ideas developed by Academy Award-winning producer Andrew Lauren, whose recent work includes The Brutalist. According to Lauren, he and Sheridan first began developing the stories years before Yellowstone transformed Sheridan into one of Hollywood’s most influential television creators.

“These projects have been years in the making,” Lauren said in a statement. “They are stories I’ve believed in deeply, and I never imagined that advances in science and shifts in the political landscape would make them feel even more timely. I began working with Taylor on these ideas long before he became one of the industry’s most distinctive voices, and it’s incredibly rewarding to finally see his passion for these stories come to life.”

Sheridan will produce both films alongside Lauren through Bosque Ranch Productions and 101 Studios.

The two projects explore very different worlds from the rugged Western landscapes that have become Sheridan’s trademark.

Visalia follows a resilient young Cuban woman who escapes the only life she has ever known in search of freedom in the United States. Years later, a historic political upheaval forces her back to Cuba, where she must confront a homeland transformed by time—and the sacrifices she made to survive.

Meanwhile, Capture the Flag centers on a NASA engineer racing to build the first reusable spacecraft capable of traveling to the moon and back. When a powerful technology billionaire offers him the chance to make history, he finds himself caught between groundbreaking ambition and his own moral principles.

While the settings differ dramatically from Yellowstone, 1883, or 1923, both stories continue Sheridan’s signature focus on complex characters facing high-stakes personal choices.

Sheridan’s return to feature films does not mean he is stepping away from television.

His production schedule remains one of the busiest in Hollywood. Following the massive success of Yellowstone, he has continued expanding the franchise through prequels 1883 and 1923, while also creating or producing hit series including Mayor of Kingstown, Landman, Tulsa King, Lioness, and the upcoming The Madison.

He also remains involved as an executive producer across the growing Yellowstone universe, including Marshals and Dutton Ranch, although he is no longer serving as the primary writer on those series.

For fans, the announcement represents an exciting new chapter. While Sheridan’s television work has earned him enormous commercial success, his return to feature filmmaking brings him back to the medium that first established his reputation as one of Hollywood’s most respected screenwriters.

With Visalia and Capture the Flag, audiences will finally get Sheridan’s first original movies in half a decade—offering a chance to see the acclaimed storyteller tackle ambitious new subjects while maintaining the emotionally driven storytelling that has defined his career.
