AFTERMATH OF A SPINE FRACTURE Recently, Cole Hauser – who played Rip in Dutton Ranch – shared the difficulties he still faces after suffering a serious spinal fracture in 2022. The actor admitted that the long-lasting aftereffects have significantly impacted his life and mobility. However, surprisingly, the filming process itself became part of his recovery journey. One of Cole’s actions during filming helped him gradually recover from the injury and its lingering effects. For many, Dutton Ranch is a project that helped Cole Hauser further solidify his reputation. But for him, the film holds a more special meaning. It’s not just work, but also a “medicine” that helped him gradually overcome the aftereffects that seemed destined to haunt him for life.

After spending five seasons portraying the rugged ranch foreman Rip Wheeler on the hit TV series Yellowstone, actor Cole Hauser has found that starring in the spin-off Dutton Ranch comes with a very different set of physical challenges.

In a May 2026 interview with People, Hauser revealed that filming in the intense Texas heat made it surprisingly difficult to maintain the physical appearance he wanted for the role.

“I was sweating it out,” Hauser said. “I mean, I usually put on about 25 pounds, but it was hard to keep it on.”

The actor reprises his role as Rip Wheeler, now one of the central characters of Dutton Ranch alongside Kelly Reilly, who returns as Beth Dutton. The new series follows Beth and Rip as they leave Montana behind and attempt to build a new life and ranching operation in Texas.

While the move created fresh storytelling opportunities, it also introduced an entirely different filming environment. The cast and crew faced everything from extreme heat to unpredictable weather conditions during production.

Director Christina Alexandra Voros described the experience as a test of endurance, explaining that the production encountered nearly every kind of weather imaginable during filming.

“We had every weather emoji over the course of shooting this,” Voros said. “Our crew is really intrepid. Our cast is really intrepid. We got through all of it, but it wasn’t easy.”

The demanding production environment has become part of the conversation surrounding the show’s turbulent first season. Reports have linked the difficult filming conditions to behind-the-scenes challenges, including the departure of showrunner Chad Feehan during production.

A Serious Horse-Riding Injury Nearly Derailed Hauser

Long before Dutton Ranch, Hauser had already developed a reputation as one of the most authentic horseback riders in the Yellowstone universe. Years of participating in the franchise’s famous “cowboy camp” training sessions helped prepare him for the physically demanding role of Rip Wheeler.

Speaking to GQ in 2024, Hauser explained that no amount of gym work can fully prepare an actor for life in the saddle.

“You’ve just got to get on the horse and spend a month,” he said. “The first two weeks suck—you’re sore, back hurts, arm hurts from roping, but those muscles turn back on, and the next thing you know, you can ride all day long.”

However, horseback riding has not always been a positive experience for the actor.

In 2017, while filming the movie The Last Champion, Hauser suffered a significant injury after falling from a horse. According to his later comments to Men’s Journal, the accident left him with a broken back.

The Cast of “Yellowstone” is Back

“My back was so bad I couldn’t move around very well,” Hauser recalled.

The injury also caused him to lose strength throughout his core, creating a lengthy recovery process. Ironically, the very activity that caused the injury eventually became part of his rehabilitation.Dutton Ranch' star Cole Hauser says Rip Wheeler is a 'throwback to the old school American man' - AOL

“What riding ended up doing is strengthening my back and my core,” Hauser explained.

From Supporting Character to Franchise Lead

For fans of the Yellowstone franchise, Hauser’s journey mirrors Rip Wheeler’s own evolution. What began as a supporting role on Yellowstone has grown into one of the franchise’s most popular characters.

Now, with Dutton Ranch placing Beth and Rip at the center of the story, Hauser carries much more of the series on his shoulders than ever before. That responsibility has required intense preparation, physically and mentally, especially while filming under harsh Texas conditions.

Between the relentless heat, demanding ranch work sequences, and long shooting days, Hauser discovered an unusual side effect of becoming the face of the franchise’s newest chapter: instead of struggling to lose weight for a role, he found himself struggling to keep it on.

For an actor who once recovered from a broken back and spent years mastering the skills of a modern cowboy, it may be just another challenge in a career built on endurance.
