Dutton Ranch season 2 is officially moving forward, but it won’t look quite the same when it returns. Following the explosive season 1 finale, Paramount+ has confirmed that several major changes are coming—both on-screen and behind the scenes. While Beth Dutton and Rip Wheeler remain at the center of the story, one beloved character’s journey has officially come to an end, and a new creative team is preparing to steer the Yellowstone spinoff in a different direction.

The most emotional change concerns Rob-Will Jackson, played by Jai Courtney. During the season 1 finale, the heir to the 10 Petal Ranch was caught in a brutal shootout with Mariano Reyes’ drug cartel, suffering fatal gunshot wounds. Although some fans hoped the series would somehow reveal that Rob-Will survived, the finale left little room for doubt. His death dramatically reshaped the power struggle in South Texas and permanently altered the future of the Jackson family.

As a result, Courtney is not expected to return for season 2 as a series regular. His departure leaves a significant void within the show’s ensemble and raises major questions about who will now take control of the 10 Petal operation. Without Rob-Will, both allies and enemies will be forced to rethink their strategies, setting the stage for an entirely new conflict.

However, cast changes are only part of the story.

Behind the camera, Dutton Ranch is also undergoing one of its biggest creative transitions. Original showrunner Chad Feehan, who developed the series and oversaw its first season, has officially stepped away from the project. Reports indicate that Feehan exited shortly before season 1 premiered following alleged creative disagreements involving executive producers and lead stars Kelly Reilly and Cole Hauser.

Although Paramount+ has not publicly detailed the reasons for the change, the departure marks a significant turning point for the series. Any change in showrunner inevitably brings a new storytelling style, different pacing, and fresh creative priorities.

According to reports, Benjamin Cavell is expected to take over as the new lead writer and executive producer. Cavell is known for his work on action-driven dramas such as SEAL Team and Justified, leading many fans to speculate that season 2 could feature a darker tone, more intense action sequences, and an even greater emphasis on crime and survival.

Despite all these behind-the-scenes changes, the core of the series remains intact.

Kelly Reilly and Cole Hauser are both expected to reprise their iconic roles as Beth Dutton and Rip Wheeler, continuing the story that has captivated Yellowstone fans since the original series. Season 1 ended with their adopted son, Carter, being kidnapped by Mariano Reyes’ criminal organization, leaving Beth and Rip with their most personal and dangerous mission yet.

Finn Little is also expected to return as Carter, whose fate is likely to become the emotional centerpiece of the new season. Rescuing him will almost certainly drive much of Beth and Rip’s storyline while escalating the war between the Duttons and the cartel.

Veteran actor Ed Harris is also expected to play a much larger role. His character, veterinarian Everett McKinney, emerged as an important ally during the first season and is reportedly set to become even more involved in helping the Duttons fight back. Kelly Reilly has previously hinted that viewers will see considerably more of Harris in season 2.

Meanwhile, Annette Bening is expected to return as Beulah Jackson, whose world was shattered by the loss of her son Rob-Will. How she responds to that tragedy could become one of the season’s most unpredictable storylines, especially as she struggles to maintain any remaining influence after the collapse of her family’s power.

The show’s primary villain is also far from finished.

Raoul Trujillo is expected to reprise his role as cartel leader Mariano Reyes, whose criminal empire survived the season finale despite suffering heavy losses. With Rob-Will dead and Carter still in danger, Mariano appears poised to become an even greater threat in season 2, potentially pushing Beth and Rip into their most violent confrontation yet.

Production is currently expected to begin in early 2027, although Paramount+ has not announced an official premiere date. Most industry observers believe the second season could arrive sometime later in 2027.

While fans are understandably disappointed to lose Rob-Will, many believe the combination of returning favorites, a new showrunner, and an even higher-stakes conflict could make season 2 the most ambitious chapter of Dutton Ranch so far. The Yellowstone universe continues to expand, but this time the journey forward will begin without one of season 1’s most memorable characters.
