Global pop star Dua Lipa has filed a lawsuit against Samsung Electronics, accusing the tech giant of using her image without permission in commercial advertising campaigns. According to reports from U.S. entertainment outlet Variety, the singer is seeking approximately $15 million in damages, equivalent to around 2.2 billion won.

The lawsuit was reportedly submitted to the United States District Court for the Central District of California against Samsung Electronics’ American subsidiary as well as the company’s headquarters in South Korea. In the complaint, Dua Lipa’s legal team alleges that the company unlawfully used the singer’s photograph and likeness on television packaging boxes as part of large-scale product marketing.
The legal filing claims Samsung began using the image on TV product packaging sometime last year. The photo at the center of the dispute was reportedly taken backstage during the 2024 Austin City Limits Music Festival. Dua Lipa’s representatives stated that they own the rights to the photograph and never granted Samsung permission to use it for commercial purposes.

According to the complaint, the singer’s team previously contacted Samsung and requested that the company stop using the image. However, they claim the request was not accepted, leading to the current legal action. The lawsuit accuses Samsung of copyright infringement, trademark infringement, and violating Dua Lipa’s publicity rights.
Dua Lipa’s attorneys also emphasized that her image was allegedly used in global consumer marketing campaigns without prior consultation, consent, or compensation. They argued that the unauthorized use of her likeness deprived the artist of control over how her identity and brand were associated with commercial products.

The case has quickly attracted attention online due to the scale of the damages being sought and the high-profile names involved. Many fans expressed shock that a global corporation would allegedly use a celebrity image without securing the necessary rights beforehand, while others are waiting to see Samsung’s official response before drawing conclusions.
So far, Samsung Electronics has not publicly commented on the allegations.

Dua Lipa first debuted in 2015 with the single New Love before rising to international fame through her self-titled debut album Dua Lipa. Over the years, she has become one of the biggest names in global pop music, earning multiple chart-topping hits and winning three Grammy Awards.
The lawsuit adds another major legal dispute to the growing conversation around celebrity image rights and corporate advertising practices. If the court sides with Dua Lipa, the case could become an important example of how entertainment and branding laws are enforced when global companies use celebrity likenesses in commercial campaigns without explicit approval.
