The behind-the-scenes shake-up at Dutton Ranch continues to be one of the biggest talking points surrounding the hit Yellowstone spinoff.

Following the show’s official Season 2 renewal, stars and executive producers Kelly Reilly and Cole Hauser have publicly addressed the unexpected departure of showrunner and head writer Chad Feehan, whose exit came just weeks before the series premiered.

Despite the production change, both actors emphasized that the first season was completed successfully and downplayed suggestions of ongoing turmoil.

Speaking about Feehan’s departure, Hauser described the situation as a normal part of the television industry.

“Showrunners change all the time,” he said. “This business is about adapting. We’ve been doing this for a long time. Things change. People move on.”

His comments offered the clearest indication yet that the creative team intends to move forward rather than dwell on the controversy that has surrounded the production for months.

Reilly echoed that sentiment, while also praising Feehan’s work on the show’s inaugural season.

“We finished Season 1 with Chad beautifully,” she explained. “We finished this season together. It was a really difficult but really satisfying show to make. And so was Yellowstone. So is anything worth making.”

She added that the production succeeded because of the collaboration between everyone involved.

“We’re all creative minds and we all work together, and I’m so proud of that.”

Although both stars spoke positively about Feehan, Reilly also made it clear that decisions regarding the series’ leadership are ultimately beyond their control.

While she and Hauser now serve as executive producers, she acknowledged that choosing a new showrunner for Season 2 is not their responsibility. Instead, that decision will rest with the studios and producers overseeing the franchise.

Feehan’s departure has generated significant speculation ever since reports surfaced that he exited the series following creative disagreements during production. Various industry rumors have linked the situation to differences involving Reilly, Hauser, executive producer Taylor Sheridan, and other members of the production team.

However, none of those rumored disputes have ever been officially confirmed by the people involved.

The discussion comes as Dutton Ranch continues to enjoy enormous commercial success.

The first season attracted approximately 12.9 million viewers worldwide during its first week, making it the biggest original series launch in the history of Paramount+. That record-breaking debut quickly convinced the studio to renew the series for a second season even before the Season 1 finale airs.

The spinoff follows Beth Dutton and Rip Wheeler after the events of Yellowstone, as they attempt to build a new life in Texas. Instead of finding peace, the couple becomes entangled in new conflicts involving the powerful Jackson family while old enemies continue to cast a shadow over their future.

Alongside Reilly and Hauser, the series also features Natalie Alyn Lind as Oreana Jackson, Annette Bening as Beulah Jackson, Finn Little as Carter, Ed Harris as Everett McKinney, and Jai Courtney as Rob-Will Jackson.

With Season 2 officially confirmed, attention has now shifted to one major unanswered question: who will replace Feehan as showrunner.

For now, neither Paramount nor the production team has announced who will take over creative leadership. But judging from the comments made by Reilly and Hauser, the cast appears determined to focus on the show’s future rather than its behind-the-scenes upheaval.
