For years, Cole Hauser and Taylor Sheridan have been linked by one of the most successful partnerships in the modern Western television world. Hauser became closely identified with Rip Wheeler, while Sheridan built the larger universe surrounding the Dutton family. But behind that creative relationship, there appears to have been a pattern of friction that stretches far beyond one recent disagreement.

According to a Page Six report, citing multiple unnamed sources and a Daily Mail report, tensions between the two men have intensified again during the Dutton Ranch era. The most dramatic allegation is that Hauser and Sheridan nearly came to blows for a second time, although the report did not specify exactly when that alleged confrontation happened.

That detail matters because a physical clash between them would not be unprecedented.

Hauser previously told Men’s Journal in 2022 that he and Sheridan actually got into a fight the second time they crossed paths after beginning to work together in 2017. He did not explain the circumstances in detail, but that admission established that their relationship had already experienced serious conflict early on.

The new reporting presents their tension less as a single explosive incident and more as a collision between two very different personalities.

One source described the relationship as “classic California versus Texas.” Sheridan was characterized as highly direct, fast-thinking and demanding, while Hauser was described as more relaxed and casual. The same insider called the pair “oil and water,” suggesting that the conflict may come as much from temperament as from any one professional disagreement.

The contrast was described even more bluntly by the source: Sheridan was portrayed as someone whose attitude is closer to “do your work and be grateful,” while Hauser was characterized as a “surfer dude” from Santa Barbara.

That framing is revealing because the issue may not simply be whether the two men like each other. It may be about how each understands authority on a television set.

Sheridan is not merely another collaborator. He is the creative force behind the world in which Hauser’s Rip Wheeler became enormously important. That gives any disagreement between them a built-in imbalance of power.

A third source claimed Hauser now tends to back down quickly during disputes because he remains extremely grateful for Rip and has significant respect for Sheridan. According to that insider, Hauser “says sorry real fast,” while Sheridan has little patience for what the source called “actor crap” or “diva” behavior.

The same source also claimed Sheridan “wants actors to stay in line.”

Those comments are allegations from unnamed insiders, not direct statements from either Hauser or Sheridan. Still, they contribute to a larger picture in which creative collaboration and professional hierarchy may be constantly pulling against each other.

Another source went even further by speculating that Sheridan could sometimes be “envious” of Hauser’s acting career.

The reasoning behind that theory was based on their different professional paths. Sheridan initially pursued acting before moving into writing and directing, while Hauser built a long career in front of the camera. The source described Hauser as a natural performer with strong timing, presence and an ease on camera.

There is no direct evidence in the report that Sheridan himself feels jealous, making this one of the more speculative claims surrounding the feud. But its inclusion shows how observers are trying to explain why tension between the two may have persisted for so long.

More concrete are Hauser’s own recent comments about working on Dutton Ranch without Sheridan around on set.

In a July interview, Hauser said, “It was about putting my head down and working my ass off with what I had around me.”

He then added, “We had to figure out on our feet how to really perform and tell a story. So I’m proud of what we accomplished, and I look forward to doing it again.”

On the surface, those comments can be read as praise for the cast and crew’s ability to adapt. Hauser presented the experience as difficult but ultimately rewarding.

However, the report claims those remarks were “not appreciated.”

One source argued that, whether Hauser intended it or not, his comments effectively suggested that there were problems behind the scenes of Dutton Ranch. If that interpretation is correct, then the tension may involve something more sensitive than personality differences. It may also concern who controls the public narrative around the production.

That is particularly important because Sheridan’s absence from set was openly connected by Hauser to the challenges the actors faced while trying to make the story work.

The history between the two men adds another layer.

In November 2023, they became connected to a legal dispute involving competing coffee brands. Sheridan’s Bosque Ranch objected to the alleged similarity between its logo and the logo used by Free Rein, the coffee brand associated with Hauser.

That lawsuit was dismissed in January 2024, and neither man publicly commented on the dispute afterward.

Taken together, the timeline is difficult to ignore: an admitted fight early in their working relationship, a later legal battle involving their business interests, different working styles, Hauser’s recent comments about filming without Sheridan and now reports of another near-confrontation.

At the same time, the most sensational claims remain unverified.

Neither Hauser nor Sheridan had responded to Page Six’s requests for comment at the time of the report. The alleged second near-fight, claims about jealousy and descriptions of how Hauser behaves during arguments all come from anonymous sources rather than direct confirmation.

That uncertainty may be the most important part of the story.

There is clearly a documented history of friction between Hauser and Sheridan, but the real question is how much of the current narrative reflects an active breakdown in their relationship and how much is outside interpretation of two strong personalities who have clashed before.

For Dutton Ranch, however, even the perception of conflict matters. Hauser is one of the faces of the franchise, while Sheridan remains one of the most powerful creative figures behind it.

If their differences remain manageable, the tension may simply become another chapter in a complicated professional relationship.

If they do not, then the biggest behind-the-scenes threat to Rip Wheeler’s future may have nothing to do with what happens on screen.
