ENHYPEN leader Jungwon has unexpectedly found himself at the center of online controversy after a seemingly innocent Weverse comment was interpreted by some fans as a subtle reference to former member EVAN (formerly Heeseung). What appeared to be a heartfelt message about Sunoo’s absence quickly spiraled into heated debate, with critics accusing Jungwon of reigniting old wounds while supporters insist his words have been taken completely out of context.

The controversy began after BELIFT LAB announced that Sunoo would be unable to participate in ENHYPEN’s concert in Mexico due to a sudden health issue. As expected, the group performed with six members, and afterward ENHYPEN’s official social media account uploaded the traditional post-concert group photo featuring the members who were present on stage.

Shortly after the photo was posted, Jungwon left a brief comment that read:

“Ah, with one person missing, it feels so empty.”

For many fans, the meaning seemed obvious.

Given that Sunoo had been forced to miss the performance because of health concerns, Jungwon’s message appeared to be a simple expression of how much the group missed performing with all of its members together. Numerous ENGENEs interpreted the comment as a touching acknowledgment of Sunoo’s absence and wished the singer a speedy recovery.

However, not everyone saw it that way.

Some fans quickly connected Jungwon’s words to EVAN, formerly known as Heeseung, who officially departed ENHYPEN earlier this year.

Back in March, BELIFT LAB announced that Heeseung would leave the group following discussions about his future career plans. The company confirmed that he would pursue solo activities under the stage name EVAN, while ENHYPEN would continue promoting as a six-member group.

The announcement divided the fandom, with many supporters expressing sadness over the lineup change while others debated the circumstances surrounding his departure and what it would mean for the group’s future.

Because of that lingering sensitivity, a small number of fans interpreted Jungwon’s comment as an indirect reference to the former member rather than Sunoo.

Some accused the leader of making a remark that could reopen old divisions within the fandom, while others criticized him for allegedly fueling unnecessary speculation.

A few negative posts even went as far as attacking Jungwon personally, with one viral comment bluntly stating, “I hate Jungwon.”

Those reactions, however, were quickly met with strong opposition from many other fans.

Supporters argued that the timing and context of Jungwon’s message made its meaning perfectly clear. Since the comment was posted directly beneath a concert photo taken after Sunoo’s medically related absence, they believe there is little reason to assume it referred to anyone else.

Many fans criticized the speculation as an example of people reading far too much into a single sentence.

“This was obviously about Sunoo,” one fan wrote.

Another commented that turning a supportive message into drama only distracts from wishing Sunoo a healthy recovery.

Others noted that Jungwon has consistently demonstrated care for his fellow members throughout ENHYPEN’s career, making it unlikely that he would intentionally post something designed to provoke further controversy surrounding EVAN’s departure.

The debate also reflects how emotionally charged discussions about former members often remain long after lineup changes occur.

Whenever a group experiences a significant departure, even ordinary comments can become the subject of intense scrutiny as fans search for hidden meanings that may not have been intended.

In this case, neither Jungwon nor BELIFT LAB has responded to the online speculation.

Meanwhile, ENHYPEN continues promoting as a six-member group while EVAN moves forward with his solo career under his new stage name.

For now, there is no evidence that Jungwon’s comment was directed at anyone other than Sunoo, whose absence prompted the original post. Nevertheless, the incident demonstrates how a single sentence from an idol can quickly evolve into a major online controversy when viewed through the lens of an already divided fandom.

Whether fans ultimately see the remark as an innocent expression of missing a teammate or continue to speculate about deeper meanings, one thing is clear: even the simplest words can spark enormous debate in the world of K-pop.
