After nearly a decade away from the network, Song Joong-ki is officially preparing for a major return to KBS through the upcoming romantic comedy drama Love Cloud.

According to an exclusive report from Hankook Ilbo, the new series has secured a weekend time slot on KBS2 and is currently expected to premiere during the first half of next year. The drama will reportedly air as the follow-up to the highly anticipated KBS series Munmu.

The news is generating massive excitement among K-drama fans because Love Cloud marks Song Joong-ki’s first KBS project in approximately 10 years since the legendary success of Descendants of the Sun in 2016.

For many viewers, the casting feels less like a normal drama announcement and more like a symbolic “homecoming.”

Back in 2016, Descendants of the Sun became one of the biggest Korean dramas of its era, dominating ratings across Asia and turning Song Joong-ki into one of the most recognizable romantic leading men in the industry. His portrayal of Yoo Si-jin — the charismatic special forces captain — helped the drama reach peak ratings of nearly 38 percent and sparked a global Hallyu phenomenon.

The series also famously starred Song Hye-kyo, who later became Song Joong-ki’s wife before the couple’s highly publicized divorce in 2019.

Because of that history, many fans online are already describing Love Cloud as an emotionally symbolic return for the actor, especially since he has not appeared in a KBS drama since Descendants of the Sun ended.

Since leaving KBS, Song has spent years expanding his acting range through darker and more complex projects. His performances in Vincenzo and Reborn Rich earned both critical praise and huge ratings success, helping him transition from “romance star” into a more versatile leading actor capable of balancing comedy, action and psychological drama.

Set against the dreamy and mystical backdrop of Jeju Island, Love Cloud combines romance, aviation and fantasy elements in a story where “love becomes the weather.”

Song Joong-ki will reportedly play Kang Woo-joo, a former flight instructor who reunites seven years later with aspiring pilot Ahn Ha-nee. The female lead will be played by Park Ji-hyun, whose recent rise in popularity has made her one of the industry’s most-watched actresses.

The two characters reconnect after years apart when Woo-joo becomes an air traffic controller while Ha-nee pursues life as a pilot, setting the stage for a romance built around reunion, unresolved emotions and fate.

The project will be directed by Song Min-yeop, while actors Lee Si-woo and Choi Hee-jin are also reportedly considering joining the cast.

Online reactions to the casting news have been overwhelmingly enthusiastic so far, particularly among longtime K-drama viewers who still associate Song Joong-ki with the golden era of large-scale romantic melodramas on Korean broadcast television.

Some fans are already calling the project “classic K-drama material,” praising the emotional setup, Jeju Island setting and aviation-themed storyline.
