TAYLOR SHERIDAN’S FORMULA FOR SUCCESS HAS BEEN REVEALED In a recent interview, Kurt Russell – who played Preston Clyburn in The Madison – made some noteworthy comments about Taylor Sheridan’s projects. According to him, from Yellowstone and Dutton Ranch to The Madison, all of them achieved their strong appeal thanks to a single core element. It’s not gunfights, shocking plot twists, or star-studded casts as many people might expect. On the contrary, what keeps audiences engaged with Sheridan’s films is something very familiar yet increasingly rare on modern television. An element that appears in almost every story he tells, regardless of the setting – a farm, a small town, or powerful families. Kut Russell believes this is the “secret formula” behind Taylor Sheridan’s consistent success. And once you recognize this common thread, you’ll find it present in almost every film he’s ever made.

Veteran actor Kurt Russell believes he has figured out why television creator Taylor Sheridan continues to produce some of the most popular dramas on television.

Speaking at the 2026 Monte-Carlo TV Festival, Russell argued that Sheridan’s shows resonate because they connect with what he called “the silent majority” of viewers—people who see themselves, their families, and their experiences reflected on screen.

Russell, who stars as Preston Clyburn in Paramount+’s The Madison, said audiences often recognize something familiar in Sheridan’s storytelling.

“You keep finding yourself saying, ‘I know that moment,’ or ‘I know those people,’” Russell explained.

The actor believes that sense of familiarity is the secret behind the success of Sheridan’s growing television empire, which includes hits such as Yellowstone, Landman, and Lioness.

A Story About Loss, Family, and Second Chances

In The Madison, Russell plays Preston Clyburn, the patriarch of a wealthy family whose life is forever altered by tragedy.

The series follows the Clyburn family as they relocate from New York City to Montana’s Madison River Valley after the deaths of Preston and his brother Paul, portrayed by Matthew Fox.

At the center of the story is Preston’s wife Stacy, played by Michelle Pfeiffer. Much of the show’s emotional weight comes from her struggle to process grief and reexamine her marriage after losing her husband.

Russell described the series as one aimed squarely at adult audiences, particularly those who have experienced significant loss or reached a stage in life where reflection becomes unavoidable.

“It’s really an adult-themed show, because you can’t really appreciate it until you have something like that happen to you at a certain time in your life.”

He went even further, saying the emotional impact of The Madison is unlike anything he has done during his decades-long career.

“I’ve never done anything like The Madison in terms of how it hits people.”

Why Preston and Stacy Feel So Real

One of the themes Russell highlighted was the complexity of long-term relationships.

According to him, Stacy’s storyline explores the painful realization that even a successful marriage can leave behind regrets and unanswered questions.

Discussing Pfeiffer’s character, Russell said:

“Very few people have the opportunity to have a wonderful 40-year marriage but where you had no idea how wonderful it was.”

He explained that Stacy is forced to confront feelings of guilt, anger, and sorrow as she looks back on a relationship she may have taken for granted.

The actor believes that emotional realism is a major reason audiences connect with the series.

Inspired by His Own Relationship

Russell also revealed that many of the conversations between Preston and Stacy reminded him of discussions he has had with his longtime partner, Goldie Hawn.

The couple have been together for more than four decades, making some of the show’s themes especially personal for him.

“Some of the conversations that they have, I’ve had.”

He added:

“Goldie and I have had very similar conversations.”

For Russell, what makes Preston and Stacy’s relationship unusual on television is that it isn’t built around betrayal, conflict, or secrets.

“It’s a truly loving relationship. It’s not like there’s another shoe to drop.”

How Does "The Madison" Season 1, Part 2 End for the Clyburns?

That foundation, he argues, makes Stacy’s loss even more devastating.

Recognition for a Legendary Career

Russell made these comments while attending the Monte-Carlo TV Festival, where he received the prestigious Crystal Nymph Award honoring his contributions to television and entertainment.

The award arrives during a period of renewed television success for the actor. In addition to The Madison, Russell currently stars in Monarch: Legacy of Monsters, expanding a television résumé that already spans more than six decades.

More Seasons Already on the Way

Fans of The Madison will not have to worry about the show’s future.

Before the series premiered, Russell revealed that discussions between Pfeiffer, Sheridan, and Paramount+ led to an expanded production plan.

Rather than producing only a single season, the creative team decided to move forward with multiple installments.

Season 2 has already been completed, and the series has also received a renewal for a third season, underscoring Paramount+’s confidence in Sheridan’s latest drama.

For Russell, the show’s appeal ultimately comes back to something simple: authenticity.

Whether it’s ranchers in Yellowstone, oil workers in Landman, or grieving families in The Madison, Sheridan’s stories succeed because viewers recognize pieces of their own lives in them.

As Russell put it, audiences keep returning because they watch these characters and think:

“I know that moment. I know those people.”

And in an era crowded with increasingly larger-than-life television, that sense of recognition may be Sheridan’s most powerful formula for success.
