The landlord slapped the phone out of the tenant’s hand and stomped it to pieces right in front of him. He was stunned when the shattered phone suddenly emitted the voice of a female lawyer.

“Put that damn camera away before I shove it down your throat!” the man roared, his open hand coming down like a meat cleaver, striking my wrist with enough force to send a shockwave of pain straight up to my shoulder.

The iPhone flew out of my grip. It tumbled through the air, spinning violently, before slamming hard face-down onto the concrete sidewalk. A sickening CRACK echoed off the brick facade of the coffee shop, sharp as a snapping bone.

I stepped back, cradling my throbbed wrist, but didn’t utter a single cry.

The man—a stocky, middle-aged landlord named Richard, wearing an overpriced tailored suit that could barely contain his bulging gut—stepped over the fallen phone. His boots stomped inches away from the glass. His face was flushed crimson, sweat glistening on his receding hairline, his nostrils flaring like a bull about to charge.

“You think you’re smart, don’t you?” Richard spat, leaning in close, his finger poking aggressively into my chest. “You think you can just stand on my property, record me, and intimidate me into giving back your deposit? You’re a nobody! A broke tenant! I told you to leave, and now your precious little phone is dead. What are you gonna do now, huh? Call the cops? It’s your word against mine, and I’ve got five property lawyers on retainer!”

He brought his heavy leather shoe down with a brutal, deliberate crunch right onto the center of the phone, grinding his heel into the glass. Spiderweb fractures blossomed across the screen under the pressure. Bits of glass rained onto the pavement.

“There,” Richard sneered, wiping his hands together as if brushing off dirt. “Destruction of evidence? Good luck proving I did it. No cameras on this alley. No witnesses. Now pack your shit and get off my building’s curb before I lose my temper for real.”

I looked down at the shattered phone. The screen was black, crushed, and utterly ruined.

Then, a faint, metallic voice chirped out from the cracked speaker.

“Richard Vance, I strongly advise you to stop speaking immediately.”

Richard froze. The smug grin on his face faltered, his head snapping down toward the crushed device on the ground.

The phone’s screen was obliterated, but the front-facing camera—embedded in the reinforced top glass—was still glowing with a tiny, persistent green dot. Beside it, the speaker was firing on high volume.

“For the record,” the clear, icy voice continued from the pavement, “my name is Victoria Sterling, senior partner at Sterling & Vance Litigation. And you, Richard, just committed felony assault, intentional destruction of evidence, and criminal property damage—all captured live in high-definition 4K audio and video.”

Richard’s face drained of color so fast he looked like he was about to vomit. “W-what?”

“I was on a scheduled FaceTime consultation with my client when you approached,” I said calmly, stepping forward and picking up the shattered phone. I angled the cracked screen slightly so the undamaged front camera was pointed straight up at his terror-stricken face. “I wasn’t recording a video for social media, Richard. I was giving my attorney a live walkthrough of the illegal lock-out you performed this morning.”

“And I have to thank you, Mr. Vance,” Victoria’s voice boomed crisp and clear through the phone’s speaker. “Not only did you clearly identify yourself on camera, but you also explicitly confessed to an illegal eviction, admitted to destroying federal and private property, and physically assaulted my client on a live, cloud-recorded legal call. The footage was automatically saved to our law firm’s secure server three seconds ago.”

“No… no, wait,” Richard stammered, raising his hands, taking a frantic step back. “It… it was a misunderstanding! He was trespassing! He provoked me!”

“You slammed his phone out of his hand and crushed it under your boot while making verbal threats of further violence,” Victoria replied with a cold, ruthless sharp tone. “I am currently patching in the local precinct dispatcher. Officers are three blocks away. I suggest you stay right where you are, because if you run, I will add fleeing the scene of a crime to your docket.”

Richard stared at me, his mouth opening and closing in complete, helpless shock. The bravado, the anger, the arrogant landlord posture—all vanished, replaced by the sheer, paralyzing panic of a man who had just handed his enemy the rope to hang him with.

I carefully slipped the shattered phone into my pocket, wiped a speck of dust off my jacket, and looked him straight in the eye.

“Thanks for the evidence, Richard,” I said softly. “My lawyer says it’s standard practice to sue for damages.”
