One of the most viral behind-the-scenes details from Margo’s Got Money Troubles involves the show’s now heavily discussed underwater bathtub scene featuring Elle Fanning.
According to cast and crew interviews, the sequence was far more physically demanding to film than many viewers realized.
To capture the suffocating underwater visuals, the production team reportedly placed a large plexiglass panel along the side of the bathtub set. This allowed cameras to shoot directly through the transparent wall and capture Margo submerged beneath the water while trapped underneath Jinx’s body.
The result created one of the show’s most visually claustrophobic moments.
Viewers online praised the scene for feeling intensely intimate and disturbing at the same time — almost like watching Margo psychologically disappear underwater in real time.
But filming it became a logistical nightmare.
After nearly every take, water reportedly flooded across the set floor, forcing crew members to rush in with towels, pumps, and equipment resets before cameras could roll again.
Because the actors were constantly splashing, shifting positions, and partially submerged, continuity became extremely difficult to maintain. Even small movements could completely alter lighting reflections or water levels visible through the plexiglass.
That meant the crew had to repeatedly rebuild the scene from scratch.
Actor Nick Offerman later joked about how exhausting the filming day became.
“Everyone slept well after the filming day” he laughed in an interview, implying the entire set was physically drained after hours of resetting water, camera rigs, and performances.
The anecdote quickly spread online because fans were fascinated by how much practical work went into a sequence that only lasts a few minutes onscreen.
Many viewers originally assumed the underwater visuals were achieved mostly through editing or CGI enhancement. Instead, the production relied heavily on practical camera placement and repeated physical takes.
That realism may explain why the scene resonated so strongly with audiences.
Rather than feeling stylized or artificial, the moment carried a raw, almost suffocating physicality that amplified Margo’s emotional collapse in the scene.
And ironically, one of the show’s most technically difficult sequences ended up becoming one of its most talked-about moments online.
