“Today is not your birthday, you useless little leech!”
The cruel, spiteful screech shattered the joyous atmosphere of the dining room, freezing eight-year-old Lily right as she bent forward with her eyes closed, about to blow out the eight glowing candles on her birthday cake. Before anyone could react, her stepmother, Evelyn, stepped forward carrying her own biological son in her arms. With an arrogant, malicious sneer, Evelyn lifted her heavy designer heel and brought it slamming down directly into the center of the delicate two-tiered chocolate cake.
SQUISH!
Frosting, sugar flowers, and shattered candles exploded across the table, splattering all over Lily’s white birthday dress and staining her face. The customized cake collapsed into a ruined, muddy heap of cream and sponge. Lily gasped in utter horror, tears welling up instantly in her wide, innocent eyes as her stepbrother clapped his hands and giggled at the mess.
Evelyn folded her arms, looking down at her weeping stepdaughter with pure, unadulterated contempt. For months, Evelyn had hated how much attention her husband showered on his daughter from his previous marriage. Driven by a narcissistic desire to erase the memory of Lily’s late mother, Evelyn was infuriated that Lily was having a celebration at all while her husband was away. In her twisted mind, ruining the cake in front of the house staff was the ultimate way to establish total dominance and put the young girl in her place.
“Look at you, crying like a pathetic baby!” Evelyn sneered, pointing a sharp acrylic nail at the crying girl. “Your father isn’t here to protect you today! From now on, birthdays in this house belong only to my son!”
Evelyn puffed out her chest, thoroughly convinced that behind closed doors—with her husband thousands of miles away on an overseas business trip in London—she held all the power, completely untouchable and free to bully the motherless child without any consequences.
However, Evelyn had made one fatal, catastrophic mistake.
Propped up on a decorative tripod directly in front of the birthday cake was a high-end tablet. Resting on the screen was a live, encrypted video call that had been running for the past hour.
Lily’s father, Richard—a powerful international real estate developer—was currently sitting in a VIP conference lounge in London. Because his flight had been delayed, he had instructed the house staff to set up a live stream so he could watch his daughter blow out her candles and celebrate with her in real-time.
Every single second of the brutal act—Evelyn’s cruel insult, her stomping the cake, the explosion of frosting, and her gloating speech—had been broadcast in crystal-clear high definition directly to Richard’s screen.
A sudden, deafening slam echoed from the tablet’s speakers as Richard punched his mahogany desk in London, his face turning a terrifying, lethal shade of crimson through the screen.
“Evelyn!” Richard’s voice boomed through the dining room speakers with such razor-sharp, thunderous fury that the room temperature seemed to plunge to absolute zero.
Evelyn froze dead in her tracks. Her arrogant smirk instantly vanished, replaced by a ghost-white, paralyzing terror as she turned slowly to face the tablet screen.
“Ri… Richard?!” Evelyn stammered, her voice cracking into a high-pitched, pathetic squeal as her hands began to shake violently. “Honey! Wait… it’s not what it looks like! The cake was spoiled! I was just… I was trying to protect her from bad food!”
“Shut your mouth!” Richard roared into the microphone, his eyes blazing with pure, unadulterated disgust. “I saw everything. I heard every single word you said to my daughter.”
Evelyn’s mouth opened and closed like a fish out of water as her elaborate, fake-loving facade completely collapsed into sheer panic. “Richard, please! I was just stressed! Don’t be mad!”
“You have two hours to pack your bags and get out of my house,” Richard declared, his tone dropping into a icy, unyielding register. “I have already instructed my legal team to file for an immediate divorce, strip you of all marital allowances, and revoke your access to every credit card under my name. If you are still on my property when I return, security will have you removed in handcuffs.”
Without waiting for her hysterical weeping and excuses, Richard cut the call.
He immediately turned to his executive assistant in London. “Cancel all my meetings for the rest of the week. Book me on the very first private jet back home right now.”
Within twenty-four hours, Richard’s private flight touched down. He marched into the house, completely ignoring his disgraced, tearful ex-wife as she was escorted out the front gate by private security, permanently cast out into the street with nothing to her name.
Richard walked straight into the dining room, knelt beside his brave daughter, and pulled her into a tight, warm embrace. Placed on the table in front of them was a brand-new, even grander birthday cake brought personally by her father, ready for Lily to make her true wish in peace.
