“Hand that back before you embarrass us any further, old lady,” he chuckled into his headset, his slick, stage-rehearsed smile flashing under the blinding studio spotlights.
Before the seventy-eight-year-old woman could even finish her sentence, the charismatic young host—a twenty-eight-year-old TV personality named Drake—snatched the wireless gold microphone straight out of her delicate, liver-spotted hands.
SCREECH!
A sharp wave of feedback pierced through the arena’s massive sound system.
Drake stepped smoothly between the elderly woman and the center camera, tossing his styled hair back as he let out an exaggerated, theatrical laugh for the live studio audience.
“Look, we love our senior citizens, folks, we really do!” Drake announced, gesturing mockingly toward her with a flick of his wrist. “But this is the Grand Finale of Nation’s Next Star! The viewers at home didn’t tune in to hear an ancient monologue about the ‘good old days.’ They came to see dynamic, young energy! Time for you to head back to the VIP lounge and let the real stars take the stage!”
A uncomfortable, suffocating silence settled over the five-thousand-seat auditorium.
The live audience stopped cheering. In the front row, the four celebrity judges froze in their seats, their jaws dropping in utter disbelief.
The elderly woman, Mrs. Evelyn Vance, stood alone under the hot lights in her simple velvet dress. She didn’t gasp. She didn’t lower her head in shame, nor did she attempt to wrestle the microphone back. She simply folded her hands gracefully in front of her, her sharp, intelligent blue eyes locking onto Drake with a look of calm, unshakeable dignity.
Drake flashed a confident grin at the teleprompter, waiting for the audience to laugh along with his joke.
Instead, a deep, booming voice echoed through the arena’s main PA system from the executive control booth above.
“Cut the feed! Cut his mic right now!”
Drake blinked, his stage smile faltering slightly as his in-ear monitor exploded with frantic, screaming chatter from the show’s Executive Producer.
“Drake, you absolute idiot!” the producer shrieked through the earpiece so loudly that Drake winced, pulling the earpiece out slightly. “Do you have any idea what you just did?!”
“What?” Drake muttered under his breath, keeping his face turned away from the main camera. “She was taking up broadcast time! I’m keeping the pacing snappy—”
“That ‘old lady,'” the producer roared, “is Evelyn Vance!”
Drake’s face went dead, ghostly pale. The arrogant, slick posture he had maintained seconds ago froze in an instant.
“She… she’s who?” Drake stammered, his voice squeaking through the muted stage mic.
“She is the creator, executive producer, and sole rights owner of the entire Next Star global franchise!” the producer screamed. “She funded this entire production! And she was on stage to read the card and announce tonight’s multi-million-dollar winner!”
The air left Drake’s lungs in a sharp, agonizing gasp.
The flush of smug pride drained out of his face so fast he looked like he was about to faint right on the stage floor. His hands began to tremble uncontrollably as he slowly turned his head to look at the quiet, distinguished woman standing beside him.
Down in the front row, the show’s lead judge—a world-famous music mogul—stood up, grabbed his own desktop microphone, and pointed a furious finger straight at Drake.
“Give her the microphone back, you arrogant little fool!” the judge barked, his voice booming across the entire arena. “Show some respect to the woman who built your entire career!”
The five thousand audience members erupted into a deafening wave of gasps and outraged shouts.
“Get him off the stage!” a voice yelled from the front row.
“Apologize to her!” dozens of audience members chimed in, their collective fury locking Drake under a harsh, suffocating spotlight.
Drake’s knees felt weak. The smooth, confident TV host persona evaporated into pure, paralyzing humiliation. With shaking hands, he held the gold microphone out toward Mrs. Vance, bowing his head so low his forehead almost touched his knees.
“Mrs. Vance… I… I am so deeply sorry…” Drake choked out, his voice cracking into a high-pitched, pathetic panic as tears of sheer terror welled in his eyes. “I didn’t recognize you… I thought… I was just trying to keep the tempo—”
Mrs. Vance didn’t take the microphone immediately. She looked down at him with a quiet, level gaze that carried immense, devastating authority.
“A true performer knows that charisma without respect is just noise, Drake,” she said softly, her clear voice picked up by the stage monitors.
She calmly took the gold microphone from his trembling fingers, turned her back on him entirely, and stepped back up to the center stage mark.
“Security,” Mrs. Vance announced smoothly into the microphone, her voice echoing with absolute elegance throughout the arena, “please escort Mr. Drake off my stage. His contract with this network is officially terminated.”
Two heavy-set floor security guards immediately stepped up, grabbed Drake firmly by his arms, and hauled the weeping, ruined host off the live broadcast set.
As Drake was dragged into the dark wings of the stage in total disgrace, the arena erupted into a thunderous, standing ovation. Mrs. Vance opened the gold envelope in her hands, smiled warmly at the cheering crowd, and proceeded to crown the nation’s newest star.
