Director Yoo In-shik, 54 years old, shared his thoughts on actor Cha Eun-woo.

Director Yoo In-shik revealed behind-the-scenes episodes about the Netflix series ‘“The Wonderfools”’ (written by Heo Da-jung, directed by Yoo In-shik) in an interview with Sports Chosun on the afternoon of the 15th.

‘“The Wonderfools”’ is a work that deals with a comic adventure where a group of neighborhood underdogs who accidentally gain superpowers in the late 1990s strive to protect the world against villains threatening peace.

Director Yoo In-shik brought up the topic of Cha Eun-woo, who caused controversy due to tax evasion allegations before the release of ‘“The Wonderfools”’. He said, “‘“The Wonderfools”’ required a standard male protagonist, and this character was one where mystery and enigmatic qualities coexisted. The character was a key driving force in the early and mid-stages of ‘“The Wonderfools”’. Specifically, while it was important to be somewhat enigmatic, the character also needed to appear clumsy. Additionally, a warm, fairy-tale-like image was desired, and that was Cha Eun-woo. We really wanted him to join,” expressing affection.

Earlier, Cha Eun-woo faced public outrage after being ordered to pay approximately 20 billion Korean won in back taxes by the National Tax Service. Naturally, this had a significant impact on the release of ‘“The Wonderfools”’. Regarding this, he honestly shared, “The release date for ‘“The Wonderfools”’ had already been set, and editing and post-production were completed when we learned about Cha Eun-woo’s situation through the news. It would be a lie to say we weren’t embarrassed as part of the production team.”

He added, “As you can see from the work, ‘“The Wonderfools”’ is a teamwork-driven series. As the director, the best decision was to maximize the work’s completion and give viewers a chance to properly judge it. Many people were involved in this project, and regardless of its success, everyone put in a lot of effort. For now, my only hope is that the work is properly shown to viewers and then evaluated, regardless of the controversy.”

The Wonderfools Cast Addresses Cha Eun-woo Tax Controversy

Regarding Cha Eun-woo, who is currently serving in the military, he cautiously conveyed the situation: “After the controversy, we haven’t had a chance to talk directly or meet. Isn’t he currently serving in the military? I heard through others that he is deeply concerned.”

‘“The Wonderfools”’ stars Park Eun-bin, Cha Eun-woo, Choi Dae-hoon, Lim Sung-jae, Kim Hae-sook, and Son Hyun-joo. The screenplay was written by Heo Da-jung, and directed by Yoo In-shik, who previously worked on ‘Romantic Doctor Kim Sa-bu’ and ‘Strange Lawyer Woo Young-woo’. It was released globally via Netflix on the 15th.
