South Korean actor Yoo Yeon-seok is facing renewed criticism online after an old interview clip resurfaced and began circulating widely on social media.

The controversy originated from a discussion on X (formerly Twitter) where users were asked to name Korean actors they considered controversial or problematic. During the conversation, one user shared a video from 2016 featuring Yoo Yeon Seok during promotional activities for the film The Mood of the Day.
In the clip, Yoo discussed his views on dating and first impressions between men and women. His comments suggested that when a woman dresses very conservatively around a man, the man may interpret it as a sign that she is not interested in him romantically. He further implied that women who want to attract a man’s attention might choose more revealing clothing.

he said in an interview that women who don't cover themselves or who don't wear modest clothes are basically asking for men's attention. plus he was shaming his costar for her choice of clothes pic.twitter.com/VSH6pjY1Vx https://t.co/BSurTuFnpr

The remarks became even more controversial because Yoo directed part of the discussion toward his co-star Moon Chae-won, who was sitting beside him during the interview. He jokingly suggested that her conservative style of dress might be one reason she was not dating.
Although the interview took place nearly a decade ago, the clip has resurfaced several times over the years. Each time it reappears, it generates debate about whether the comments were harmless humor reflective of the interview’s tone or whether they reveal problematic attitudes toward women and dating.
This latest resurgence has produced particularly strong reactions. Many critics argued that Yoo’s remarks reinforce outdated stereotypes that place responsibility on women to dress in certain ways in order to gain male attention. Others criticized the broader entertainment culture that often treated such comments as acceptable during the 2010s.
The backlash has also extended beyond the actor himself. Some online users questioned how similar attitudes were normalized in Korean entertainment at the time, while others pointed out that standards regarding gender issues and workplace conduct have changed significantly since the interview originally aired.

As criticism spread across social media, some viewers began discussing Yoo’s upcoming projects, with a number of netizens stating that the resurfaced clip negatively affected their perception of the actor. A small portion of commenters even claimed they were less interested in supporting future productions featuring him.
At the same time, others argued that the comments should be viewed within the context of a 2016 promotional interview and noted that there has been no recent controversy involving Yoo making similar statements. Some fans also questioned whether it is fair to judge public figures solely based on remarks made many years ago without considering potential personal growth or changes in perspective.
Neither Yoo Yeon Seok nor his agency has publicly commented on the latest wave of criticism.
For now, the controversy highlights how older interviews can resurface years later and be reevaluated through the lens of modern social attitudes. What may have passed with limited criticism in 2016 is now being scrutinized far more intensely by audiences who expect celebrities to demonstrate greater awareness of gender stereotypes and social issues.
