Netflix fans ‘bawling their eyes out’ over true crime doc that’s number one film

It has become the most watched title in just two days

A newly released true crime documentary is leaving Netflix viewers ‘crying like a baby’ as it has shot to the top of the charts within just a matter of days.

The feature-length documentary The Truth and Tragedy of Moriah Wilson only landed on the platform on Friday (April 4) but has already become the most watched title on the service. At the time of writing, it currently holds the top spot as the number one most watched film amongst UK subscribers, instantly surging past the likes of Peaky Blinders: The Immortal Man and Care.

According to the film’s synopsis provided by Netflix, the film is an intimate, arresting portrait of cyclist Moriah Wilson. Moriah was raised by a fierce, loving family whose singular drive becomes her superpower, carrying her to athletic brilliance and, devastatingly, toward a life cut short by murder.

The search for her killer made national headlines in May 2022, as did the trial that followed. This film goes beyond the headlines to explore the impact of this devastating crime on those who knew and loved Mo, while also examining the investigation that took place.

It features extensive interviews with her immediate family members, close friends, as well as colleagues and supporters of her as an athlete. What emerges is a powerful, deeply human story about loss, love, and the ways that grief can reshape lives, while also revealing moments of resilience and transformation even in the darkest of times.

t is directed by celebrated documentary filmmaker Marina Zenovich. The director has previously crafted documentaries about comedians Richard Pryor and Robin Williams, as well as helming 2020’s Lance, about Lance Armstrong. She also made I’m Chevy Chase and You’re Not which was released earlier this year and examined the career of the sometimes controversial comic actor, reports the Mirror.

Viewers have been not only quick to watch the film shortly after it became available, but also eager to heap praise upon it. One, sharing their opinion of the documentary online, described it as “absolutely harrowing” and added “if this doesn’t touch your soul , nothing ever will.”

Numerous others also took to social media to express their views on the documentary, with one posting: “Perhaps the most moving and beautiful true crime doc I’ve seen.”

A very compelling documentary.” While someone else admitted: “I just finished this and cried like a baby!! She was such a beautiful driven person!”

Many commended the tone of the film, which placed considerable emphasis on Moriah’s career and her ambition to become a professional athlete.
