Actor Luke Grimes has heaped praise on his new co-star, Riley Green, following their collaboration on the project “Marshals”. Despite his background as a country music singer, Green demonstrated a natural aptitude for acting and a level of professionalism that exceeded the entire crew’s expectations. His outstanding portrayal of the character not only impressed the seasoned cast members but also added a unique, standout element to the film. Yet, few are aware that this great chemistry stemmed from an unexpected moment on set—one that earned him Luke Grimes’s utmost respect.

Luke Grimes has nothing but admiration for his new co-star Riley Green after witnessing the country singer make his acting debut in the Yellowstone spin-off series Marshals. Although Green was already known to fans as a successful country music artist, his transition from performing on stage to appearing in front of the camera surprised many people involved in the production. According to Grimes, Green’s natural ability, dedication, and professionalism exceeded the expectations of both the cast and crew, proving that his talent extended far beyond music.

He's a Really Talented Guy”: Luke Grimes Says Riley Green Was Better Than Anyone Expected on 'Marshals' | Holler

The connection between Luke Grimes and Riley Green’s collaboration on Marshals began in an unexpected way. While the two were working together on music, Green opened up about his interest in pursuing acting. At the same time, Marshals was beginning to take shape, and Grimes immediately saw a possible opportunity for his friend to become part of the project.

Grimes, who portrays Kayce Dutton in Taylor Sheridan’s Yellowstone universe, recalled that he already knew what direction the show would take and believed Green could fit naturally into the story. Since Marshals would explore elements involving military backgrounds, Grimes imagined Green as someone who could portray a former Navy SEAL and a longtime teammate of Kayce Dutton.

During his conversation with Cody Alan on SiriusXM’s The Highway, Grimes explained that the idea came together when Green mentioned his desire to act. He felt that Green had the right presence for the role, especially because of his appearance and personality. Grimes jokingly admitted that he was also aware of the challenge of sharing the screen with someone like Green, who stands 6-foot-4 and has a striking appearance.

Despite the humor, Grimes genuinely believed that Green had the potential to succeed as an actor. He felt the role would be an ideal introduction for the singer and brought the idea to the showrunner. The response was positive, as the showrunner already knew who Riley Green was and supported the idea of creating a meaningful role for him.

However, not everyone immediately accepted the casting decision. Grimes revealed that CBS wanted Green to audition before officially approving him for the role. While those involved with the Yellowstone world were familiar with Green’s music career, some CBS executives in Los Angeles were not as familiar with him. Because of that, the network wanted to make sure that Green had the acting ability required for the character.

Grimes found the situation amusing because he already believed Green was capable of delivering the performance. He recalled being surprised that Green had to audition for a role that had been specifically considered for him. Still, the audition gave Green the opportunity to prove himself, and Grimes participated in the reading with him when Green traveled to Utah.

Interestingly, Riley Green himself later expressed appreciation for the audition process. Rather than receiving the role simply because of his success in country music, Green said he was grateful that he had the chance to earn the opportunity. He explained that he wanted to know he was capable of handling the role and appreciated receiving confirmation that he could perform well on screen.

For Green, the audition represented an important step because acting was a completely new challenge. He understood that entering a major television production without previous acting experience was a significant opportunity, and he wanted to prove that he deserved the chance. His attitude showed that he approached the project with humility and a willingness to learn.

After seeing Green work on set, Grimes became even more impressed. He emphasized that Green’s performance went beyond what anyone expected from someone appearing in his first acting role. According to Grimes, talent can translate across different creative fields, and Green demonstrated that his abilities were not limited to music.

Grimes praised Green’s work ethic and described his performance as something special. The Yellowstone actor highlighted that Green had never acted on a set like this before, yet he adapted quickly and delivered a performance that surprised the entire team. His portrayal of Garrett, Kayce Dutton’s former Navy SEAL teammate, became a memorable addition to the series.

Although Riley Green will not return as Garrett for Season 2 of Marshals, his appearance represents another example of how the Yellowstone franchise has incorporated country music talent into its storytelling. Across the Yellowstone universe, several country artists have appeared on screen, including performers featured in the original series and other spin-offs.

The franchise has previously welcomed artists such as Lainey Wilson, Zach Bryan, Ryan Bingham, Turnpike Troubadours, and Shane Smith & The Saints. These appearances have helped strengthen the connection between the shows and the country music world, with music remaining an important part of the Yellowstone identity.
