Production is officially underway on Season 2 of Marshals, and the Yellowstone spinoff is already preparing several notable changes to its cast and story. Filming has resumed in Utah following a first season that ended with major questions hanging over nearly every central character. The biggest concern among viewers involves Cal and Belle, whose lives appeared to be in serious danger after the bloody ambush that closed out the Season 1 finale. Those fears grew even stronger when CBS released an early look at the new season featuring Kayce, Miles, Andrea and Thomas Rainwater, while Logan Marshall-Green’s Cal and Arielle Kebbel’s Belle were nowhere to be seen. Their absence immediately fueled speculation that the finale might have marked the end of one or both characters, but behind-the-scenes comments from the actors have now provided a much clearer picture of what is actually happening.

Season 2 will also expand the role of Maddie, Cal’s estranged daughter, played by Morgan Lindholm. Introduced during the first season as a bartender, Maddie quickly became more important when her unexpected connection to Cal was revealed. Her relationship with Miles, played by Tatanka Means, added another layer to her storyline, and that relationship is expected to receive further attention as the series continues. Lindholm’s expanded presence suggests that Cal’s complicated family history could become an even more significant part of the drama. At the same time, the series is bringing in Marque Richardson in a recurring role as Assistant U.S. Attorney Patrick Burns. These casting developments indicate that Marshals is widening its world rather than simply repeating the dynamics established during its debut season, with new professional and personal conflicts likely to intersect with the existing characters.

Still, the biggest mystery after Season 1 remained the fate of Cal and Belle. In the finale, Andrea received an opportunity that could take her away from Montana and send her to Washington, D.C., creating uncertainty around her own future. Cal and Belle, however, faced a much more immediate threat. While carrying out a mission, they were caught in a violent ambush involving Tom Weaver, played by Chris Mulkey. The episode ended without clearly revealing whether they survived, allowing viewers to imagine the worst. Because neither character appeared in the first promotional images for Season 2, speculation intensified that the show might have quietly killed them off or that Marshall-Green and Kebbel were preparing to leave the series. Fortunately for fans of both characters, the actors have now confirmed that the situation is not quite what those teaser images appeared to suggest.

Marshall-Green has confirmed that Cal survived the attack, although survival does not mean he will emerge from it unharmed. The actor explained that Cal is alive but “not necessarily unscathed,” a description that strongly suggests the ambush will have serious consequences when the story resumes. He also revealed that he was only hours away from filming the opening episode of Season 2 when discussing the character’s fate. According to Marshall-Green, Cal is hardly alone in facing difficult circumstances, since practically everyone in the series is dealing with major problems by the end of the first season. His comments remove the possibility that Cal simply died off screen, but they leave open much larger questions about his physical condition, emotional state and ability to continue doing the dangerous work that has defined his story.

Kebbel has offered similarly reassuring news about Belle, directly confirming that she is part of Season 2. Even more importantly, she revealed that filming picks up from the moment of the Season 1 cliffhanger, meaning viewers should not expect the series to skip over the immediate aftermath of the ambush. Kebbel explained that she was already deeply focused on Season 2 and recalled that, when she originally read the finale script, her first concern was actually Cal rather than Belle. Because Belle frequently finds herself in dangerous situations, the actress had become accustomed to seeing her character placed at risk. In the final sequence, Cal was positioned in front of Belle during the attack, leading Kebbel to believe that he was the one facing the greater immediate danger. Her comments confirm Belle’s return while also suggesting that the opening of Season 2 will directly reveal how both characters escape — or endure — the attack.

Cal’s survival does not mean his Season 2 journey will become easier. Marshall-Green has made it clear that he wants the series to fully explore the difficult material surrounding the character, particularly Cal’s battle with cancer. Rather than giving him a convenient or overly safe path forward, the actor wants the storyline to acknowledge the physical and emotional realities faced by people who have already endured demanding careers in uniform and then find themselves confronting another life-changing struggle. He acknowledged that advances in treatment could potentially allow Cal to continue living in both worlds, but emphasized that the most important question is what stories remain worth telling. That decision ultimately belongs to creator Spencer Hudnut and the writing team, alongside the broader direction of the series and Luke Grimes’ long-running portrayal of Kayce.

Marshall-Green also dismissed concerns that he is looking for an exit from Marshals. He spoke enthusiastically about continuing to work with the cast and crew and indicated that he could easily imagine remaining with the series for years. That is particularly significant given the speculation created by Cal’s apparent fate in the finale and his absence from the first Season 2 images. Rather than signaling a departure, the ambush now appears to be setting up the next stage of Cal’s story. The actor also acknowledged how demanding the production can be, describing the first season as a grueling shoot, but his comments make clear that the intensity has not diminished his enthusiasm for returning. Combined with Kebbel’s confirmation that she is already involved in the new season, the evidence strongly points toward both Cal and Belle remaining important pieces of the series.

Season 2 of Marshals, therefore, will bring change without abandoning two of the characters at the center of its biggest cliffhanger. Maddie will have a larger role, her relationship with Miles will continue to develop, and Patrick Burns will arrive as a new recurring figure, while Andrea’s possible move to Washington creates another unresolved storyline. Most importantly, Cal and Belle both survived long enough to return, although the consequences of the ambush are expected to follow them into the new season. Cal is alive but apparently far from untouched, while Belle will be present when the story resumes directly from the violent finale. With production underway in Utah, the Yellowstone spinoff is positioning its second season around both an evolving ensemble and the fallout from the dangers established in Season 1.
