Jesy Nelson has revealed that she wanted to leave Little Mix just two years after the group was formed, long before she eventually made the decision to step away from the band. The singer, now 34, opened up about her experience during an appearance on the Great Company with Jamie Laing podcast, offering a deeply personal reflection on her time in the award-winning girl group and the difficult choices she faced behind the scenes.

Little Mix was formed in 2011 after winning The X Factor, instantly propelling Jesy and her bandmates — Jade Thirlwall, Perrie Edwards, and Leigh-Anne Pinnock — into global fame. Their success was swift and overwhelming, bringing fortune, recognition, and intense public scrutiny. While the group went on to become one of the most successful girl bands in British history, Jesy admitted that the reality of life in the spotlight quickly became challenging for her.
During the podcast, Jesy explained that her desire to leave the band emerged much earlier than many fans might expect. Only two years into Little Mix’s journey, she began seriously questioning whether she could continue. At the time, the group was already widely known, though they had not yet reached the peak of their success. Despite their popularity, Jesy found herself struggling emotionally and mentally with the pressures that came with fame.
She recalled sitting down with her family to weigh the pros and cons of leaving the band so early in her career. One of the biggest concerns was uncertainty about what her future would look like if she walked away at that point. Everyone knew who Little Mix were, and leaving raised difficult questions about what opportunities would remain open to her afterward.
Jesy shared that it was ultimately her brother who played a pivotal role in convincing her to stay. He encouraged her to recognize her own strength and reassured her that she was more resilient than she believed. He suggested that if she could endure the situation for a few more years, it might give her the chance to secure a future not just for herself, but for her entire family.
In a moment of honesty, Jesy revealed that her brother advised her to make the most of the opportunity financially. He told her that the platform she had been given was rare and unlikely to come around again. By staying longer, he believed she could truly change her family’s life, and then leave on her own terms when the time felt right. Looking back now, Jesy said she believes her brother was right and that she is grateful she listened to his advice.

She explained that the financial stability she gained during her years in Little Mix has since become even more meaningful. Jesy is now a mother to twin daughters, Ocean Jade and Story Monroe, who were diagnosed with Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA), a severe genetic neuromuscular disease. The condition causes progressive muscle weakness due to the loss of motor neurons, and in its most severe form, SMA1, children may not live beyond the age of two.
Jesy has spoken publicly about how devastating the diagnosis has been, but also about her determination to use her platform to raise awareness and fight for change. She noted that the resources she now has allow her to explore additional treatments and support options for her daughters, something she may not have been able to do otherwise.
Despite receiving such heartbreaking news, Jesy and her family made the decision to continue filming her upcoming Amazon Prime documentary, Jesy Nelson: Life After Little Mix. Speaking in London ahead of its release, she explained that continuing to document her journey felt important. She believed there was a reason the cameras were there and that sharing her story could help make a difference for other families facing similar challenges.
Jesy said one of her main goals now is to campaign for SMA to be included in the heel prick test given to newborn babies, which could allow for earlier diagnosis and potentially life-saving treatment. While she admitted that watching the documentary back will be incredibly difficult, she expressed gratitude for the support she has received and for the opportunity to raise awareness.

Reflecting on her journey, Jesy acknowledged that leaving Little Mix just one year before the band’s tenth anniversary took immense courage. Although the decision came much later than she once hoped, she now feels at peace with the path she chose. Today, her focus is firmly on her daughters, her advocacy work, and embracing the next chapter of her life, hopeful that sharing her story will lead to meaningful change.
