Fans of Netflix’s hit western drama Ransom Canyon were left frustrated after the arrival of one of television’s most recognizable stars turned out to be far less impactful than expected. Steve Howey, a beloved small-screen actor known for major roles in popular series, joined Season 2 as Staten’s mysterious younger half-brother Levi, creating excitement among viewers who believed his appearance would bring a major new storyline. Instead, many were disappointed to see Howey hidden beneath a heavy beard and limited to only a handful of brief scenes, making his highly anticipated role feel like a missed opportunity.

Since arriving on Netflix in July, Ransom Canyon Season 2 has quickly become one of the platform’s biggest summer successes. The new season climbed to the top of the daily Top 10 rankings and reached No. 3 globally, proving that audiences remain deeply invested in the emotional conflicts, romance, and family drama surrounding the residents of the Texas ranch community. Many fans have returned to rewatch the eight-episode season, revisiting the major twists and character developments that shaped the latest chapter of the story.

Season 2 brought back many familiar faces while also introducing several new characters. Among the new additions were Quinn’s mother Claire, portrayed by Academy Award-nominated actress Patricia Clarkson, and Yancy’s wife Sidney, played by Heidi Grace Engerman. However, one introduction stood out as especially surprising because of its connection to Staten’s family history: the arrival of his younger half-brother Levi.

For some viewers, Levi’s appearance raised immediate questions. His existence seemed to come unexpectedly, as fans had not previously been aware that Staten had a younger sibling. While the revelation had the potential to expand Staten’s personal history and explore a previously unseen side of his character, the storyline moved so quickly that many viewers were left wondering why such an important character was introduced if he would barely be involved in the season.

Levi is played by Steve Howey, the actor widely recognized for his work in Reba and Shameless. In Ransom Canyon Season 2, Levi makes his first and only appearance in the fifth episode, when Staten escapes into the wilderness and reconnects with his long-lost brother. The character has been living away from society for an unclear amount of time, with very little explanation provided about his choices or his life outside the Double K Ranch world.

The two brothers share the same father, Sam, but they were raised by different mothers. Levi’s mother recently passed away, giving him and Staten a reason to reconnect after years apart. During their time together around the campfire, the brothers reflect on their childhood memories and discuss how their lives eventually moved in completely different directions. While Staten remained connected to their father and the family ranch, Levi chose a much different path away from that lifestyle.

However, Staten’s reunion with Levi was not entirely motivated by family affection. Staten had another purpose in seeking him out. He hoped Levi would return to the Double K Ranch and help influence an important vote involving their father. Staten attempted to convince Levi that the ranch was also part of his home and legacy, but Levi rejected that idea, making it clear that he did not feel connected to a place where he had spent so little time.

The emotional reunion between the brothers ended almost as quickly as it began. Staten eventually woke up to discover that Levi had disappeared without explanation, leaving behind the possibility of what their relationship could have become. For many viewers, the storyline felt unfinished because Levi’s presence introduced interesting possibilities but failed to explore them in a meaningful way.

The biggest criticism surrounding Levi’s role is that Ransom Canyon seemed to waste the opportunity to feature Steve Howey. As one of the season’s most recognizable guest stars, Howey brought significant attention to the show, but his character was given very little material to work with. The actor’s transformation, including the large beard that changed his appearance, even made him difficult for some viewers to immediately recognize.

Howey has remained highly active in television, including his role as a series regular on ABC’s successful procedural drama High Potential and his recurring appearance in Prime Video’s popular hockey romance series Off Campus. Because of his experience and popularity, many fans expected his involvement in Ransom Canyon to become one of the season’s major highlights. There is still hope that the character could return in a larger role if Netflix renews Ransom Canyon for a third season. Levi’s brief appearance may have been intended as an introduction rather than a complete storyline. However, the show has previously shown a willingness to remove characters and shift its focus in new directions, meaning there is no guarantee that Levi will return. His future depends on the writers’ plans as well as Howey’s availability. Fans would welcome his comeback, but they want more than another short appearance. If Steve Howey returns as Levi, viewers hope the series will finally give the character the depth, screen time, and storyline that his introduction promised.
