As the first season of MARSHALS approaches its finale, the show continues to captivate its audience with one shocking twist after another across its 13 episodes. This week’s episode escalates the tension, plunging the U.S. Marshals into an intense and perilous challenge, deep within the icy waters of a remote mountain range. Cal, however, proves to be an unreliable guide, quickly getting them lost in the snow-covered woods. As the winter storm looms closer, they find shelter in a dilapidated hunting cabin. The cabin, offering little protection from the cold, becomes a place of intense friction as the three men struggle to stay warm and survive. While Kayce manages to start a fire, it’s the simmering tension and unresolved emotions between the men that provide the real heat. Kayce confronts Cal, bringing up the guilt that Cal harbors over the death of their former SEAL team member, Roner, and how Cal’s actions during their final mission in Afghanistan led to his demise.

As the night drags on, Cal, unable to bear the weight of his guilt, leaves to gather firewood but ends up falling through the ice of a frozen pond. Barely managing to make it back to the cabin, he becomes dangerously hypothermic. In a desperate move, Kayce forces Lamb to give up his thermal shirt to help save Cal, inadvertently revealing the Yellowstone “Y” brand tattoo on Lamb’s chest — a mark that links him to the Dutton family’s violent past, much like the one Kayce bears himself.

With the storm intensifying, the men’s strained alliance begins to unravel. Lamb takes advantage of the distraction caused by the brothers’ arguments, dousing the fire and making a break for it. In the ensuing chaos, he escapes into the wilderness, leaving Kayce and Cal to chase after him. Cal, still weak from his near-death experience in the freezing water, is quickly overpowered by Lamb, resulting in a dramatic and tense confrontation.

As the episode unfolds, viewers are given glimpses into the tragic past of the four men — Kayce, Cal, Garrett, and Roner — through flashbacks to their final mission in Afghanistan. The mission was disastrous, marked by bad intel and faulty equipment. The team was forced to split up, and the ensuing chaos led to Garrett’s injury and Roner’s apparent death. Cal, believing that Roner had died in the field, called for a retreat, only later to learn that satellite imaging showed Roner was still alive when they left him behind. It was this decision that Kayce had blamed Cal for, but as the truth comes out, it is revealed that Garrett had told Cal that Roner was dead, and Cal took the blame to protect Garrett from the guilt.

With the mysteries surrounding Garrett and the Duttons exposed, Kayce and Cal make their way down the mountain, but they are ambushed one last time by Lamb’s accomplice. Just as things look dire, Andrea and Belle, two other key members of the Marshal team, arrive just in time to save the day. However, even with Lamb seemingly defeated, a final shot of the frozen pond shows a red patch of blood beneath the ice, suggesting that Lamb may not have truly escaped, and the Duttons are not the only ones with a trail of bodies in Montana.

Meanwhile, Andrea and Belle are working on their own investigation, trying to track down Lamb, who is still evading them. They follow leads using the phone records of a deceased prison bus driver and eventually discover that Lamb had been in contact with several people. One of these individuals, Ripley, reveals that Lamb had tried to arrange for supplies to be brought to him in the mountains. When Lamb’s would-be accomplice, Ben, is tracked down, Andrea and Belle intervene, shooting him before he can harm anyone else.

The episode ends on a somber note, however, as the team learns that Garrett, who had been severely injured in a fire, has passed away in the hospital. The loss of Garrett weighs heavily on the team, leaving them shattered and grief-stricken.

While all this unfolds, Miles, another member of the Marshal team, finds himself caught up in Rainwater’s political machinations. Rainwater, who has been fighting to move a controversial mineral mine away from the Broken Rock reservation, enlists Miles to help him sway a Montana senator. Although Miles is reluctant to be used as a pawn in Rainwater’s game, he agrees to help for the greater good of the reservation, even though the road ahead is uncertain.
