Panettiere was found unresponsive inside an apartment in South Carolina on Sunday, and emergency responders were unable to revive her. Four days after her death, her on-and-off boyfriend Brian Hickerson addressed the tragedy through his legal representatives. Rather than discussing the circumstances surrounding her final hours, Hickerson’s statement focused on one request: that the media and public allow investigators to complete their work and respect the privacy of Panettiere’s loved ones during an extraordinarily difficult time.
Hickerson’s attorney, Sloan Ellis of the Ellis Hinton law firm, said that Panettiere’s death remains under investigation and stressed the importance of allowing that process to continue without speculation or interference. The statement added that, out of consideration for Panettiere’s family and other loved ones, as well as the ongoing investigation, Hickerson would not be making any additional comments at this stage. It marked his first public response in the four days following the actress’s death and came as questions continued to surround exactly what happened inside the apartment.
Police have confirmed that Hickerson, 37, was present at the property where Panettiere died, along with his brother, Zach Hickerson. According to a police report, a Greenville officer responding to the residence on Sunday afternoon encountered the two brothers before seeing paramedics attempting to resuscitate an unresponsive woman. The responding officer wrote that there did not appear to be an obvious physical explanation for why the patient was unresponsive. Despite the emergency team’s efforts to save her life, Panettiere was pronounced dead at 2:31 p.m. The Greenville County Coroner’s Office subsequently said that the official cause of death remained under investigation.
While investigators have not announced a definitive cause of death, details surrounding the emergency call have attracted significant attention. A dispatcher could reportedly be heard referring to a cardiac arrest during the 911 call from the apartment, while the audio also included mention of a suspected overdose. Sources later told TMZ that Narcan, a nasal medication commonly administered to reverse an opioid overdose, was found on a mattress at the property. However, the presence of Narcan or statements made during an emergency call do not by themselves establish a cause of death, and authorities have not publicly confirmed that an overdose was responsible. Hickerson’s legal team therefore emphasized the need to wait for investigators and the coroner to reach their conclusions.
Panettiere would have turned 37 on Friday. She became widely known at a young age before achieving major television success through roles in series including “Heroes” and “Nashville.” Her career unfolded alongside personal struggles that she later discussed publicly, including difficulties involving alcohol addiction and depression. In the months before her death, Panettiere had also spoken candidly about growing up in the entertainment industry and the emotional consequences of spending much of her childhood in the public eye. Those revelations became even more personal with the publication of her memoir, “This Is Me: A Reckoning,” which was released approximately three months before her death and explored some of the most painful periods of her private life.
One of the relationships discussed in the memoir was Panettiere’s turbulent involvement with Hickerson, whom she first began dating in 2018. Their relationship was repeatedly interrupted and became the subject of public scrutiny after Hickerson was arrested multiple times in connection with domestic violence allegations. She alleged that Hickerson had once beaten her so severely that she remained inside her home for weeks because she did not want the public to see her injuries.
