Her reaction becomes physical when she attacks him, showing both her anger and her refusal to accept the version of events being presented to her. Rather than admitting that she betrayed Joe, Oleksandra argues that Russia has been manipulating everyone involved and that the apparent evidence against her is part of a much larger operation.

According to Oleksandra, the Russians did not initially know everything they needed to know about their target. Instead, they suspected the truth and deliberately sacrificed people in order to confirm it. She argues that the operation was designed to force someone into revealing information, allowing Russia to verify suspicions without directly exposing its own agents. Oleksandra insists that if Russian intelligence had genuinely wanted to seize its target immediately, the target would already have disappeared. Her explanation introduces doubt into Joe’s original theory. Although Joe still has no reason to completely trust Oleksandra, the possibility emerges that the Ukrainian operative may not be the traitor responsible for the attack after all.

While the interrogation unfolds, Joe is facing another battle at home. Her family remains traumatized after witnessing the consequences of her dangerous career arrive directly at their doorstep. Her daughters are terrified that the next attack could be even worse, and they desperately ask their mother to leave her job. Joe refuses. For her, retirement is not a realistic answer to the threat surrounding them. She explains that surrendering does not make evil disappear; it only gives it more freedom to grow. Oleksandra’s proposal centers on Aleksi Yurimov, the leader of Russia’s Special Tasks Department. Her idea is to make Russia believe that the CIA has successfully captured Yurimov. Such a development would represent a major intelligence crisis, potentially forcing Russian assets and their co-conspirators in the United States to communicate, move, or otherwise expose themselves. Oleksandra offers to help Joe identify those operatives when they inevitably reach out to her. Instead of treating Oleksandra only as a suspected enemy, Joe begins considering whether she can be used as bait in a much larger counterintelligence operation. The strategy is extremely risky, but it could transform Joe’s apparent vulnerability into an advantage.

The plan also reflects Joe’s refusal to retreat after the attack on her family. Rather than hiding or waiting for the enemy to make another move, she prepares to create the conditions for the enemy to reveal itself. Oleksandra may be telling the truth, manipulating Joe, or doing both at the same time, which makes their developing cooperation particularly dangerous.
