Following its March premiere, CBS confirmed a second season less than two weeks later, a decision likely driven by the series’ impressive performance. Within the first week, Marshals attracted 20.6 million multiplatform viewers, and by mid-April, it had become one of the most-watched shows across both broadcast and streaming platforms.
The series follows Luke Grimes’ portrayal of Kayce Dutton, a former Navy SEAL grappling with the death of his wife. He reconnects with an old colleague and joins the U.S. Marshals, navigating both personal loss and professional challenges. Season 1 concluded on May 24, highlighting the escalating threats against Thomas Rainwater, played by Gil Birmingham, and setting up numerous cliffhangers regarding the future of the Broken Rock reservation.
CBS officially announced the renewal of Marshals for a second season on March 12. The series premiere marked the network’s most-watched original series debut without a football lead-in since Young Sheldon in 2017, and also became the most-streamed episode ever on Paramount+. CBS executive Amy Reisenbach credited the overwhelming viewer response to the strength of the Yellowstone world, the bold character-driven storytelling, and the dynamic performances of the cast, especially Grimes.
The first season finale saw Kayce Dutton facing a moral and personal dilemma. After the deaths of his wife and his friend Garrett, Kayce considered selling East Camp to wealthy rancher Tom Weaver, played by Chris Mulkey. Ultimately, he decided against it, choosing to preserve his connection to the land and his past. Instead, he announced plans to convert East Camp into an equine therapy center for veterans, inspired by Garrett’s passion for horses.
Simultaneously, fellow marshal Andrea Cruz, portrayed by Ash Santos, received a job offer to relocate to Washington D.C. Despite forming an attachment to Montana’s wide-open spaces, her future remained uncertain as she sought a reason to stay. However, the central tension revolved around the assassination attempts on Thomas Rainwater.
