On the afternoon of the 21st, the First Criminal Division (Ban A) of the Namyangju Branch of the Uijeongbu District Court, presided over by Judge Kim Guk-sik, opened a trial concerning a man in his 30s, referred to as A, who was detained and charged with robbery causing bodily harm. During the proceedings, Nana appeared as a witness, and the moment she entered the courtroom, she confronted A directly.

“Is this fun for you? Look me in the eyes,” she said sharply, her voice full of anger. The tension was palpable. The judge, attempting to calm her down, urged Nana to sit down, noting that her intense emotions might hinder the trial. Nana responded, “I can’t help but be angry,” but after a moment, she composed herself and continued with her testimony.

Recalling the terrifying events that transpired, Nana described the situation in vivid detail. “I heard my mother groaning and the heavy breathing of a man. Upon hearing that, I felt a sense of danger, so I carefully went outside to assess the situation. When I saw what was happening, I was in a state of panic and thought I had to get my mother away from that man as quickly as possible.” She went on to explain how, at the time, she never suspected that the man was holding a knife, but she instinctively tried to wrestle it away from him, believing that he might do something harmful to her mother if she didn’t act fast.

She explained, “I didn’t think he had a knife at first, but I knew I had to grab it. The way he was acting made me believe that, because he had a knife, he could do anything to my mother. I acted on instinct to protect myself and her.” During the struggle, she managed to injure A in the neck with the knife, causing him to bleed. “He said to me, ‘I was wrong, I’m sorry, please forgive me.’ I thought he was a thief, and I believed that calming him down might help me understand his next move, so I tried to listen to him. After hearing him out, I realized just how dangerous the situation had become. That’s when I quietly signaled to my mother to call the police.”

On the day of the attack, A had allegedly broken into Nana’s home in Acheon-dong, Guri, located in Gyeonggi Province, around 6 p.m. on November 15th of the previous year. Armed with a weapon, A threatened both Nana and her mother, demanding money, and during the altercation, he caused bodily harm. Nana and her mother had originally filed a request to be absent from the trial, but the court issued a summons, forcing them to attend.
