The gates of Dutton Ranch will reopen for a second season, but the lineup won’t look exactly the same when Paramount+’s hit Yellowstone spinoff returns.
After an explosive first season filled with betrayals, violence, shifting alliances and a dramatic kidnapping, the Western drama is already preparing its next chapter.
Kelly Reilly and Cole Hauser will remain firmly at the center of the story as Beth Dutton and Rip Wheeler, while several members of the show’s supporting ensemble are also expected to saddle up again.
One prominent Season 1 star, however, has already reached the end of the trail.
Here’s where the major Dutton Ranch characters stand heading into Season 2.
Kelly Reilly Is Returning as Beth Dutton

There was never much doubt that Kelly Reilly would remain part of the series.
Beth is one half of the partnership around which Dutton Ranch was built, and the Season 1 finale gave her an intensely personal reason to return to the fight.
After Carter is kidnapped, Beth’s priority going into the new season will be getting her son back.
That mission could bring out an even more dangerous side of the character who spent years proving herself one of the most formidable members of the Dutton family on Yellowstone.
Reilly has also suggested that the structure of the show could evolve in Season 2.
Rather than concentrating almost entirely on Beth and Rip, the next chapter may distribute its attention across several major characters.
That means Beth will remain essential without necessarily dominating every storyline.
Cole Hauser Will Be Back as Rip Wheeler

Cole Hauser is also confirmed to continue as Rip.
Like Beth, Rip has unfinished business after the Season 1 finale.
Carter’s kidnapping gives the couple a shared mission and ensures their family storyline will immediately carry into Season 2.
Rip has spent much of his life protecting the people he considers family, first on the Yellowstone ranch and now in Texas.
The disappearance of Carter therefore represents exactly the kind of threat capable of pulling him back into a violent conflict.
Hauser has indicated that rescuing Carter will be one of the immediate priorities when the show returns.
But exactly what happens after that remains much harder to predict.
Finn Little’s Carter Remains Crucial
Finn Little is expected to return as Carter, whose fate became one of the biggest cliffhangers of the finale.
Carter originally entered the Yellowstone universe as a troubled teenager before gradually becoming part of Beth and Rip’s unconventional family.
His move to Texas helped provide continuity between the original series and its spinoff.
Season 1 then placed him directly in danger.
Because Carter was abducted, his storyline is almost guaranteed to play an important part in the opening episodes of the second season.
The real question is what the experience will do to him afterward.
Carter has already grown up surrounded by violence, ranch conflicts and the complicated legacy of the Dutton family. His kidnapping could push the character into a darker and more mature phase.
Ed Harris Is Staying — With a Much Bigger Story
Perhaps the most interesting return involves Ed Harris.
The veteran actor plays Everett McKinney and publicly expressed disappointment with the limited role his character received during the first season.
Harris had expected Everett to be a much more significant part of the series and revealed that he became frustrated enough during production to consider leaving.
That created uncertainty over whether the four-time Academy Award nominee would return.
He will.
Reports indicate Harris is expected back for Season 2, and his role could be substantially expanded.
Reilly has suggested that the second season may even feel considerably more focused on Harris.
That would represent one of the biggest changes to the series.
Instead of functioning primarily as a Beth-and-Rip vehicle, Dutton Ranch could develop into a broader ensemble drama with Everett occupying one of its central positions.
Annette Bening Is Expected Back as Beulah Jackson
Annette Bening is also expected to continue as Beulah Jackson.
The Oscar-nominated actress was one of the biggest additions to the Yellowstone universe when the spinoff assembled its original cast.
Beulah emerged as an important force in the Texas setting, and her continued presence would give Season 2 another heavyweight performer alongside Reilly, Hauser and Harris.
With the show’s creators apparently interested in expanding the ensemble structure, Bening could become even more important as the battle for influence develops.
Exactly how Beulah’s relationships and rivalries evolve remains one of the major questions heading into the next season.
Juan Pablo Raba Is Expected to Return as Joaquin
Juan Pablo Raba is expected back as Joaquin.
His character became deeply connected to the dangerous world surrounding Beth and Rip during the first season.
Given the unresolved conflicts left behind by the finale, Joaquin still has plenty of potential business in Texas.
Raba’s expected return also suggests that Season 2 won’t completely reinvent the supporting cast despite the significant changes taking place behind the scenes.
Instead, the series appears positioned to build on many of the relationships established during its debut season.
Natalie Alyn Lind Should Return as Oreana
Natalie Alyn Lind is also among the cast members expected back.
She plays Oreana, a character whose story became increasingly intertwined with the wider conflicts surrounding the ranch.
Keeping Oreana in the series provides the writers with an opportunity to develop some of the younger characters while the veteran stars occupy the show’s larger power struggles.
Season 2 could consequently expand her role as Dutton Ranch moves beyond the work of introducing its new Texas world.
Marc Menchaca Is Expected Back as Zachariah
Marc Menchaca is expected to reprise his role as Zachariah.
The actor was part of the sizable ensemble assembled to surround Beth and Rip in the first season.
While Paramount has not revealed detailed Season 2 storylines for each supporting character, Zachariah remains among the familiar faces currently expected to appear again.
His future could become clearer once production begins and additional casting announcements are made.
J.R. Villarreal Is Expected to Return as Azul
J.R. Villarreal is similarly expected back as Azul.
Like several of the supporting players, his continued involvement indicates that the producers aren’t abandoning the world they spent nine episodes establishing.
The larger question is how much screen time each returning character will receive.
With Harris apparently moving into a significantly expanded position, the distribution of storylines could look very different in Season 2.
Jai Courtney Won’t Return as Rob-Will
One departure is considerably easier to explain.
Jai Courtney is not expected back as Rob-Will.
Unlike the uncertainty surrounding some other members of the ensemble, Courtney’s exit is driven directly by what happened on screen.
Rob-Will was shot in the head during the Season 1 finale, bringing his storyline to a decisive conclusion.
Unless the series resorts to flashbacks or another unconventional storytelling device, viewers have seen the last of him.
His departure leaves an opening in the ensemble and could also create consequences for the surviving characters connected to his storyline.
What About the Rest of the Cast?
Fans shouldn’t assume the entire Season 2 lineup has been finalized.
Reilly and Hauser have both been cautious when discussing exactly who will remain with the series.
Reilly has suggested that the situation is still fluid, while Hauser has indicated that numerous possibilities remain open as the writers develop the next chapter.
That leaves room for additional exits, promotions and new characters.
Paramount+ could also announce new cast members as production approaches.
Given the size of the Yellowstone television universe, surprise appearances from familiar faces will inevitably be a source of speculation, although viewers should distinguish fan theories from confirmed casting.
A New Showrunner Will Lead Season 2
The cast isn’t the only part of Dutton Ranch undergoing changes.
Chad Feehan, who served as showrunner for the first season, will not return in that role.
Benjamin Cavell has taken over for Season 2.
Cavell has an extensive television résumé that includes work on Justified, Homeland, SEAL Team, The Stand and The Institute.
His arrival could bring a different creative approach to the series while it attempts to build on the enormous audience attracted by its debut.
The leadership change is particularly significant because the new showrunner will inherit several major unresolved storylines while also managing a cast filled with established stars.
Season 2 Has a Tough Act to Follow
Paramount had little reason to hesitate over renewing Dutton Ranch.
The show attracted 12.9 million global viewers during its first seven days, according to the company, giving Paramount+ the biggest original-series launch in the streaming service’s history.
That success led to an official renewal on June 24, before Season 1 had even finished airing.
The first season ultimately consisted of nine episodes.
There is not yet an official premiere date for Season 2, although production is expected to get underway in early 2027.
Until then, the writing team has plenty to resolve.
A Different Kind of Dutton Ranch Could Be Coming
The biggest Season 2 change may ultimately have less to do with who leaves than with how the returning characters are used.
Season 1 relied heavily on the enormous popularity Beth and Rip accumulated during Yellowstone.
That was an obvious strategy for launching a new series.
Season 2 now has an opportunity to broaden the formula.
A larger storyline for Harris could turn Everett into a genuine third pillar of the show, while Bening and the supporting ensemble give the writers multiple directions in which to expand the Texas story.
At the same time, Beth and Rip have one problem that cannot be ignored.
Their son is missing.
That gives Dutton Ranch a clear emotional engine for its return and ensures that, regardless of the behind-the-scenes changes, the second season will begin with the Dutton family’s most fundamental instinct intact:
Protect your own — whatever the cost.
