Netflix’s ‘Ransom Canyon’ has drawn viewers into a sweeping story of ranching families, buried secrets, and slow burning romance, and much of that pull comes from its setting. The show is built around a small town that feels lived in, dusty, and specific, which naturally raises the question of where exactly the story unfolds and whether that place is real.
The answer is more layered than it first appears. ‘Ransom Canyon’ is based on the book series by Jodi Thomas and takes place in the titular ranch town, where residents navigate personal drama as outside industrialists try to push a water pipeline through the canyon. That town, however, exists only on screen.
The Fictional Texas Town At The Center Of The Story
The town of Ransom Canyon sits at the heart of the Netflix series, but it does not actually exist as depicted, even though creator April Blair drew inspiration from real towns for the look of the place. In the story, Josh Duhamel plays Staten Kirkland, the owner of the Double K ranch, who reemerges into the community after losing both his wife and his son and begins searching for the truth about his son’s death.
Staten is also at odds with his father, Senator Sam Kirkland, and his brother in law Davis, who are working to convince nearby ranch owners to hand their land over to a corporation called Austin Water and Power. Minka Kelly plays Quinn O’Grady, a longtime family friend and owner of the local dancehall, and Staten’s connection to her becomes one of the emotional anchors of the season.
The official series description frames Ransom Canyon as a place where love, loss, and loyalty collide beneath the crimson mesas of Texas Hill Country, with three ranching family dynasties locked in a contest for control of the land. That fictional backdrop is meant to evoke a very real corner of the state, even though the show was shot nowhere near it.
Why New Mexico Doubled For The Texas Hill Country Setting
Despite its Texas framing, ‘Ransom Canyon’ was filmed throughout New Mexico, primarily in the Santa Fe and Albuquerque areas. Production ran in and around Santa Fe, Las Vegas, New Mexico, and Albuquerque from February through June of 2024, according to the New Mexico Film Office.
Over 700 New Mexicans were tapped for the production, including 380 crew members, 40 principal actors, and 300 background performers. Blair explained the reasoning behind the choice in comments shared through Netflix’s own Tudum. She noted that most of New Mexico is defined by adobe architecture, but a small former mining town in the northern part of the state, very close to the Texas border, happens to look like an old Texas town, complete with turn of the century storefronts.
That town is Las Vegas, New Mexico, not the Nevada city most people picture. Most of the downtown scenes in the series were filmed in and around Plaza Park in Las Vegas, New Mexico, a district established in 1835 and lined with heritage buildings well suited to period and Western productions. Key locations such as Quinn’s dancehall and the restaurant scenes were filmed around Plaza Park and Plaza Street in that same town.
The ranch scenes came from a separate set of locations. Staten’s Double K Ranch was filmed at Dead Horse Ranch, a historic property near Ribera, New Mexico, situated between Santa Fe and Las Vegas and set against the backdrop of Rowe Mesa. Additional ranch footage came from the Blame Her Ranch in Ribera and the Bonanza Creek Ranch in Santa Fe.
Duhamel, who both stars in and executive produces the series, described the appeal of shooting in the region in comments to Tudum. He called New Mexico a spiritual place and said it was simply an easy place to go to work, a sentiment echoed by the production’s decision to lean on the state’s landscapes rather than relocate to Texas itself.
The Real Ransom Canyon, Texas
There is a genuine town called Ransom Canyon, and it has nothing to do with a film set. The real City of Ransom Canyon sits nine miles east of Lubbock, Texas, and has a population of roughly 1,200 people. Local officials have taken notice of the show sharing their town’s name.
Elena Quintanilla, the city administrator for Ransom Canyon, told Newsweek that residents are excited because the series portrays their part of West Texas, adding that people love the small community for its quaint, rugged feel. She also said she is curious to see whether the Netflix series will draw new interest to the actual community. It is a modest town suddenly attached to a much larger streaming audience, even though not a single scene was shot there.
What Comes Next For The Ranching Families Of Ransom Canyon
The show’s fictional setting has clearly resonated with viewers. ‘Ransom Canyon’ spent four weeks on Netflix’s Global Top 10 list and reached the Top 10 in 77 countries, which contributed to its renewal for a second season. Production on Season 2 wrapped in January, with the new season trimmed to eight episodes compared to the first season’s ten.
The cast is expanding alongside the returning leads. Patricia Clarkson has joined the show as Claire, Quinn’s mother, while Steve Howey plays Staten’s half brother Levi and Heidi Engerman takes on the role of Yancy’s wife, who appeared unexpectedly at the close of Season 1. Ben Robson has also joined the cast for the new episodes.
Season 2 picks up with the future of Staten and Quinn’s relationship still uncertain, along with unresolved questions about the fate of Cap’s land under Yancy and whether Yancy and Ellie’s wedding will move forward. All eight episodes of Season 2 are set to premiere on Netflix on July 23, 2026.
With filming once again centered in New Mexico standing in for Texas Hill Country, the show is preparing to pull audiences back into a town that only exists on a soundstage and a handful of high desert ranches, yet somehow still feels like home to millions of viewers. As Staten and Quinn’s story picks back up, fans watching that reunion unfold have plenty of reason to weigh in on how they think this fractured Texas ranching saga should end.
