Having completed another successful weekend at the box office, Project Hail Mary is on the path to the $600 million milestone worldwide. The sci-fi blockbuster reportedly cost more than $200 million to produce and likely millions more to market. But it’s already being seen as a major win for Amazon MGM Studios, and it’ll likely benefit from a recently announced delay to its Prime Video release. Project Hail Mary is based on a bestseller by Andy Weir, who also wrote the novel that inspired The Martian. That film, directed by Ridley Scott and starring Matt Damon, grossed $630 million worldwide against a reported budget of around $110 million. However, this was back in 2015, when Hollywood could still count on Russia and China for significant revenue.
Here’s How Much ‘Project Hail Mary’ Has Grossed So Far
With $285 million domestically and around $575 million worldwide so far, the movie has eclipsed the $553 million lifetime global haul of Michael Bay‘s Armageddon. Released in 1998, the movie starred Ben Affleck, Bruce Willis, and Liv Tyler, among others, including future Landman icon Billy Bob Thornton.
It follows a group of miners sent into space to perform a mission similar to Ryland Grace’s in Project Hail Mary. Armageddon wasn’t as critically acclaimed as Lord and Miller’s film, but it has certainly found a place for itself in the hearts and minds of the audiences who grew up with it. The movie now holds a 42% score on Rotten Tomatoes, where the consensus reads, “Lovely to look at but about as intelligent as the asteroid that serves as the movie’s antagonist, Armageddon slickly sums up the cinematic legacies of producer Jerry Bruckheimer and director Michael Bay.” Stay tuned to Collider for more updates.
