Having passed two massive box-office milestones in its third weekend of release, Project Hail Mary continued its triumphant run toward the coveted $500 million mark worldwide. The sci-fi epic, based on a novel by Andy Weir, is set to overtake The Martian, which was also inspired by a Weir bestseller. The Martian was directed by Ridley Scott, with Matt Damon playing the lead role of an astronaut stranded on Mars with only his wits to rely on. The movie was a critical and commercial hit, grossing $228 million domestically and $630 million worldwide against a reported budget of around $110 million. Project Hail Mary cost around twice as much, which means that it needs to gross approximately $500 million worldwide to break even. The movie stars Ryan Gosling as a schoolteacher who is sent on an epic intergalactic quest to save humanity from extinction.
Directed by Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, the movie opened to near-unanimous praise from critics and audiences nearly a month ago. It holds a “Certified Fresh” 94% critics’ score and a “Verified Hot” 96% audience score on the aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes, where the consensus reads, “A visually dazzling space odyssey that’s carried along effortlessly by the gravitational pull of Ryan Gosling at his most winning, Project Hail Mary is a near-miraculous fusion of smarts and heart.” During the course of its run, Project Hail Mary has overtaken several sci-fi classics at the box office, with Christopher Nolan‘s Interstellar being a recent prey.
