Season 1 of Dutton Ranch has ended and Season 3 of Landman is coming. In between, filming for another Taylor Sheridan show is scheduled to begin, but nobody is talking about this drama.

The Laird is a Scottish themed drama filmed in Scotland. That lean description may ring all sorts of bells for Yellowstone universe fans.

What Is the Laird, Taylor Sheridan’s New Show?

Here’s what we know about the Laird:

1. Per the Sun, Taylor Sheridan wrote it.
2. Filming will begin next month.
3. It will stream on Paramount+, likely in 2027.

It’s worth noting that our source didn’t attribute any of this information and regular sources such as Deadline, Variety etc … are sitting out this news. That leaves open the possibility that this is all conjecture.

With that warning out of the way, we’ll turn to what the Sun’s TV insider said. The Laird will explore links between Scotland and America. Long ago, Scots got rich in the slave trade business. In Scotland, a “Laird” is a large landowner.

How is the Laird Related to Yellowstone?

Now we’re the ones drawing conclusions but Yellowstone prequels 1883 and 1923 taught us that the Dutton family’s roots trace back to the Scottish Highlands. Given that knowledge, and the so-so-brief show descriptor …

Could the Laird be the prequel of all prequels?

Imagine a show that reveals how James Dutton’s (played by Tim McGraw) family came to America in the early or mid-19th century. Taylor Sheridan has proven he’s not afraid of that kind of historical challenge. In fact he loves tucking unique characters into his dramatic recreations while sticking to what’s true about the cultures he’s representing.

No cast info was revealed by the Sun or anyone else reporting on the Laird. The next show in the Taylor Sheridan universe to air will be Season 3 of Lioness (Aug. 2), followed by (likely) Tulsa King and then Landman.

Frisco King and Season 2 of Dutton Ranch are also on the horizon.

Actor Kevin Costner’s public negotiations with Paramount made it clear that his character would not return to finish Season 5. This made his death inevitable as Part 2 of the final season of Yellowstone began.

Elsa Dutton’s death at the end of 1883 would be No. 1 on this list of the Yellowstone franchise’s most surprising deaths, except that we see her got shot through the chest with an arrow in the very first scenes of the prequel.

The show rewinds after that to show James Dutton’s journey northwest, but everyone knows what’s coming.

Captain Shea Brennan was an all-time great franchise character who spent the full season of 1883 in a depression. When he dies by suicide at the end, it seems fitting, but still stunning. Brennan knew what was coming all along, but viewers didn’t.

James Dutton survives 1883, but during a flashback scene in Yellowstone we see him get shot by cattle thieves. It’s not until the start of 1923 that we get confirmation of his death, however. It was an underwhelming end for the patriarch.

12. Margaret Dutton, ‘1883’ (Death Revealed During ‘1923’)

Margaret Dutton’s death was also unexpected. Like James, we learn she died from Elsa’s voiceover at the start of 1923. She froze to death after James died.

11. Claire Dutton, ‘1883’

Aunt Claire Dutton was a grouch widow set to join the Duttons as they advanced northwest from Texas in 1883. In retrospect, there’s no way she would have survived the journey, but her death by suicide foretold of the great tragedies to come.

10. John Dutton, ‘1923’

The original John Dutton died in Ep. 3 of 1923 Season 1, and it’s likely he’d rank higher on this list if we got to know him a little better. Similarly, his wife Emma (Jack Dutton’s mom) doesn’t even make this list.

9. Ennis, ‘1883’

Elsa Dutton falls in love with Ennis during 1883, and they seem set to get married and grow old together. This is the first time this franchise really toyed with our emotions. His stunning death midway through the series changed Elsa’s mood forever.

8. Donnie Haskell, ‘Yellowstone’

Sheriff Donnie Haskell was a Yellowstone regular who was (mostly) a friend to the Duttons. His death toward the end of Season 4 came out of nowhere. A cafe robbery went wrong and as John and Rip tried to intervene, Donnie caught a stray.

The real-life reason for his character’s death was so actor Hugh Dillon could go on to star in Mayor of Kingstown.

7. Fred Meyers, ‘Yellowstone’

Fred Meyers was a very small character during Season 1 of Yellowstone, but his death was important. The ranch hand was the first we saw taken to the “train station.” Viewers have no idea what’s happening until Lloyd announces that friend is boarding the “long black train” and shoots him in the head.

6. Colby Mayfield, ‘Yellowstone’

During Season 5 of Yellowstone, Colby Mayfield tries to help Carter escape from a bucking horse and gets stomped on. The sudden departure of one of the show’s most beloved characters was difficult to process. It truly felt like a life cut short.

If you watched 1883, you recognized Alexandra’s path as being similar to Elsa Dutton’s. Somewhere, we were going to find heartbreak. It came during the series finale, Ep. 7, and it was as emotional as any in this franchise.

Sarah Atwood was a villain, and everyone knows that those who come up against the Duttons are vulnerable. That’s why she ranks so high on this list. We knew she would die, but when it happened midway through Season 5, Part B, it was still a jaw-dropper.

The final two deaths on this list of the most stunning deaths in Yellowstone franchise history are very similar. Jack Dutton was bushwhacked by Clyde as he went to join Jacob and the men at the train station. He never even got to pull his gun out.

Yellowstone creator Taylor Sheridan certainly has a unique knack for working alongside the most legendary talent in the world, but there are still quite a few iconic performers I’d like to see work with him.

Did you know Robert Redford was once attached to Yellowstone, back before it got made?

At one point the project had interest from HBO, where an executive told Sheridan that if he could land Redford, he’d greenlight the project. After Sheridan personally got Redford to agree to the role of John Dutton, HBO reneged, saying they’d meant “a Robert Redford type.”

The project eventually got picked up at Paramount with Kevin Costner in the lead, and Redford and Sheridan have yet to work together on a project.

Willie Nelson

Willie Nelson is mostly known for his iconic music career, but he’s also starred in quite a few movies, including some Westerns. He’d be a perfect candidate for one of Sheridan’s projects … think of him as a wise old cowboy, doling out advice to the youngsters who are new to the life, and maybe even singing a few songs in the bunkhouse like Ryan Bingham.

Though most of her best-known roles have been TV comedy, Reba’s also filmed some fairly serious Westerns, and we can absolutely see her in a flamboyant role in a Taylor Sheridan production.

Okay, maybe this one is a little bit out of the box. After all, when’s the last time you saw Clint Eastwood do television?

But that was also true of Kevin Costner, Sam Elliott, Sylvester Stallone and Michelle Pfeiffer before they signed on to work with Sheridan, and he convinced them.

Besides, Sheridan has said that Eastwood’s Unforgiven has served as somewhat of a template for his own writing in the Western genre, so it seems like the two men would go into a project with a common understanding of what they’d like to achieve. How epic would that be?!

Now that his long-running role on Blue Bloods is coming to an end, Tom Selleck will be looking around for his next role, and he’s actually expressed active interest in working with Taylor Sheridan on some undefined project. Imagine what a great pairing that could turn out to be!

Matthew McConaughey

Matthew McConaughey seems like an obvious choice for someone who’s star in a Taylor Sheridan production, but it hasn’t happened … yet, that is.

McConaughey was long rumored to be on the verge of signing up for an upcoming sequel to Yellowstone, but when The Madison finally got announced, his name was no longer attached to the project.

It’s not clear if McConaughey lost interest, or if he might still be in negotiations for that show or some other, unknown Yellowstone-related show, but if so, there’s no information available.

Still, it seems like it’s bound to happen; Taylor Sheridan and Matthew McConaughey seems like a match that would set new television records.

Trace Adkins

Trace Adkins might not have quite the same lofty acting resume as some of the other stars on this list, but he is a credible actor when he chooses stronger roles, and his impressive voice and physical presence would serve him well in the role of some sort of heavy in the Taylor Sheridan universe.

We could even see Adkins in a John Dutton-like patriarch role. Imagine his deep, resonant baritone delivering some of that hard-to-believe-someone-would-say-that Taylor Sheridan dialogue! Instant classic.

Susan Sarandon is one of the most acclaimed film actors of her generation, and she’s also got some built-in country cred from doing Monarch with Trace Adkins.

She’d be a perfect fit as one of Sheridan’s bold female characters. Imagine her playing a strong-willed woman along the lines of Helen Mirren’s Cara Dutton in 1923. Perfection! Somebody get her agent on the phone …

Jeff Bridges

Technically, we have to file Jeff Bridges under “Icons We’d Like to See Work With Taylor Sheridan AGAIN.”

Bridges starred alongside Yellowstone actor Gil Birmingham (Thomas Rainwater) in Sheridan’s second film as a screenwriter, Hell or High Water, in 2016. But he has not starred in one of Sheridan’s epic television projects, despite the fact that he’s a perfect match. That needs to change.
