Taking on a role in a Christopher Nolan film is already a major challenge for any actor, but for John Leguizamo, his experience on “The Odyssey” pushed him beyond traditional acting. The Golden Globe-nominated actor revealed that portraying Eumaeus, the blind servant of Odysseus, required him to spend long hours on set with almost no ability to see.

Leguizamo explained that the special contact lenses used for the role dramatically affected his vision. For some filming days, he was unable to see properly for 12 to 14 hours at a time, making even simple daily activities extremely difficult.

The actor shared that he could not look at his phone, read scripts, or communicate normally while wearing the lenses. Even his remaining eyesight was unclear, leaving him dependent on other people throughout the day. He needed assistance getting to the bathroom, returning to set, and even walking to meals.

For Leguizamo, the physical challenge was only part of the experience. Being unable to interact with the outside world created a unique mental journey. When he was alone, he had no choice but to remain inside his own thoughts, describing the experience as overwhelming because of the amount of time he spent with his own mind.
