JUST HOURS AFTER DOLLY PARTON’S DEATH, RICKY SCHRODER POSTED A TRIBUTE — BUT ONE SENTENCE IN IT WAS ENOUGH TO ENRAGE A STRING OF CELEBRITIES. Schroder had played Dolly’s father in two television movies about her life, so his message initially seemed likely to be personal and heartfelt. But instead of simply sharing memories, he suddenly brought up two issues on which he had strongly disagreed with Dolly. Katie Couric needed only one word to react, while Boy George and Garbage responded even more harshly. And it was what Schroder chose to mention at such a sensitive moment that quickly turned the tribute into an online firestorm.

Dolly Parton’s death prompted an outpouring of tributes from across entertainment, but one message from actor Ricky Schroder quickly became controversial for reasons that had little to do with celebrating her career.

According to Entertainment Weekly, Schroder posted a tribute to Parton only hours after news of her death at 80 became public. Instead of focusing solely on their personal connection or her legacy, however, he chose to include his disagreement with two causes Parton had publicly supported.

Rick Schroder and Dolly Parton

“I didnt [sic] agree with her advocating for Transgender & Covid Vaccine support…but Loved her anyway,” Schroder wrote on Instagram alongside a photo of himself with Parton.

That single sentence changed the tone of the tribute.

Schroder had a real professional connection to Parton. He played a dramatized version of her father in Dolly Parton’s Coat of Many Colors in 2015 and again in the 2016 sequel Dolly Parton’s Christmas of Many Colors: Circle of Love.

He ended his message with a more personal note: “Thank you for choosing me Dolly to be your Movie Daddy.”

Had the post ended there, it likely would have been viewed as a straightforward tribute from someone who had worked closely with her.

Instead, the mention of transgender rights and COVID vaccines became the central focus.

The backlash was immediate.

Dolly Parton

Broadcaster Katie Couric reacted with a single word: “Ick.”

The band Garbage responded much more aggressively through its official account, while Boy George dismissed the post with: “Oh shut up.”

Another widely shared criticism came from Threads user Steven Havre, who argued that Schroder could have honored Parton without using the moment of her death to remind people of his disagreement with her positions.

That reaction gets to the heart of why the post became controversial.

The problem was not simply that Schroder held views different from Parton’s. Public figures frequently disagree on politics, public health, and social issues. The more sensitive issue was the decision to include those disagreements in a memorial message published within hours of her death.

In that context, critics saw the post as shifting attention away from Parton and toward Schroder himself.

Country icon Dolly Parton

That interpretation becomes even more significant when Parton’s own public record is considered.

For decades, she was widely associated with support for LGBTQ people and was often embraced as a queer icon. Her image of inclusivity was not a minor or recent part of her public identity. It had become one of the reasons she was admired beyond the country music audience.

After her death, GLAAD CEO Sarah Kate Ellis described Parton as “the queen of inclusivity and philanthropy,” specifically praising her support for LGBTQ people.

Parton’s vaccine advocacy was also not merely rhetorical.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, she donated $1 million to vaccine research efforts that contributed to the development of a vaccine. Her involvement became one of the more widely recognized examples of celebrity philanthropy during the pandemic.

Schroder’s post therefore touched two areas that were deeply connected to Parton’s public legacy: inclusion and philanthropy.

That is why the backlash was so sharp.

From one perspective, Schroder may have been trying to express affection despite disagreement. The phrase “but Loved her anyway” appears intended to communicate that his personal respect for Parton survived political or social differences.

But the timing changed how that message was received.

A memorial tribute is usually expected to center the person who died. By highlighting the policies or causes he opposed, Schroder opened the door to a debate that immediately overshadowed the personal connection he had actually shared with Parton.

The result was almost the opposite of what a tribute usually accomplishes.

Instead of prompting discussion about their work together, the post became a story about Schroder’s own beliefs.

Entertainment Weekly also noted that Schroder’s social media already contains substantial conservative political content. One recent Instagram post included caricatures of left-leaning figures described in accompanying text as “demonic socialists of America,” along with provocative imagery.

That background helped critics interpret the tribute not as an isolated awkward phrase, but as part of a broader pattern in how Schroder expresses his political views online.

Still, there is an important distinction between disagreement and disrespect.

Schroder did acknowledge affection for Parton and thanked her for giving him a meaningful role in projects based on her life. But critics clearly felt that the moment called for something simpler.

Parton had just died.

To many observers, that should have been enough reason to leave the ideological disputes out of the message.

The intensity of the reaction from Couric, Boy George, Garbage, and others shows how strongly people felt that Parton’s death should not have been used as a platform for political disagreement.

There is also a deeper irony.

Parton’s public appeal often came from her ability to connect with people who did not necessarily share the same values, backgrounds, or politics. She was loved across cultural divides precisely because her public image centered on warmth, humor, generosity, and inclusion.

Schroder’s tribute attempted to acknowledge that affection across disagreement.

But by naming the disagreement so bluntly, he ended up creating exactly the kind of division that Parton’s public persona often seemed to transcend.

That may be why the post generated such a strong reaction.

The controversy was not really about whether Ricky Schroder was allowed to disagree with Dolly Parton.

It was about whether the hours after her death were the right moment to make that disagreement part of the story.

And for many of the people responding to him, the answer was clearly no.
