When Ransom Canyon arrived on Netflix, many viewers immediately compared the series to Taylor Sheridan’s hit Western drama Yellowstone. But behind those comparisons, something unexpected began happening — the Netflix series started becoming a launchpad for actors who were later recruited into Sheridan’s expanding Western universe.

As new projects such as Marshals and Dutton Ranch began taking shape, several familiar faces from Ransom Canyon found themselves crossing over into different corners of the modern Western genre. For creator and showrunner April Blair, the development has been both exciting and challenging.

“They all got real busy,” Blair joked when discussing how the growing success of her cast affected production schedules. While seeing her actors receive bigger opportunities has been rewarding, it also created complications when trying to bring them back for future seasons of Ransom Canyon.

One of the biggest examples is Tatanka Means, who plays Jake Longbow in the Netflix series. Jake serves as an important figure in Staten Kirkland’s ranch operations, providing stability and loyalty within the complicated world of Ransom Canyon.

However, Means’ growing role in Sheridan’s universe changed his availability. He was cast as Miles Kittle, one of the central characters in Marshals, a Yellowstone spin-off led by Luke Grimes. Because of his new commitment, Jake’s appearance in Ransom Canyon Season 2 was more limited than originally hoped.

Blair admitted that losing some of Means’ screen time was disappointing, but she was also genuinely happy for the actor’s success.

She explained that Tatanka Means is an important part of the show and that she hopes audiences will see much more of Jake in the future. The challenge, however, is finding a balance between maintaining the story of Ransom Canyon while allowing its talented cast members to explore new opportunities.

Tatanka was not the only actor caught between two major Western worlds. Brett Cullen, who plays Staten Kirkland’s father Sam Kirkland in Ransom Canyon, also joined Marshals, taking on the role of Chief Deputy U.S. Marshal Harry Gifford.

Meanwhile, Sterlin English, who portrays Sterlin in the Netflix series, appeared in Dutton Ranch as a character named Austin. These casting connections have made the relationship between the two franchises even more noticeable among fans.

Despite the similarities, April Blair insists that Ransom Canyon is not simply trying to copy Yellowstone. She pointed out that the novel series by Jodi Thomas, which inspired the Netflix adaptation, was published in 2015 — several years before Yellowstone premiered.

Blair acknowledged the enormous influence Taylor Sheridan has had on the Western genre. She credited Yellowstone with helping bring the modern Western back into mainstream popularity and creating more opportunities for stories set in that world.

However, she emphasized that the emotional foundation of Ransom Canyon is very different.

While Sheridan’s shows are often associated with intense conflicts, violence, and power struggles, Blair explained that her series focuses more on romance, emotional connections, family bonds, and the complicated feelings that shape people’s choices.

She described Ransom Canyon as a story centered around love, longing, and human relationships rather than destruction and revenge.

That difference is one of the reasons Blair believes the two franchises can exist alongside each other. Instead of competing for the same audience, they offer different interpretations of the Western genre.

For fans, this crossover between casts creates an interesting situation. Viewers who discover an actor through Ransom Canyon may later see them in a completely different role within Sheridan’s universe, creating a unique connection between the shows.

Blair even joked that it feels like Sheridan’s team is “getting even” with her by taking so many of her actors for their own projects. But behind the humor is a clear sign of success: having actors in demand is a problem many creators would love to have.

As both worlds continue expanding, scheduling conflicts may become an ongoing challenge. Fans are already hoping that future filming plans for Ransom Canyon, Marshals, and Dutton Ranch will allow stars like Tatanka Means, Brett Cullen, and Sterlin English to continue appearing across these popular Western stories.
