TAYLOR SHERIDAN IS SET TO TAKE A MUCH BIGGER ROLE IN DUTTON RANCH SEASON 2 — BUT THE REAL REASON HIS RETURN MATTERS MAY HAVE LESS TO DO WITH THE SCRIPT ITSELF. Kelly Reilly previously admitted that she was unsure how Beth could work without Sheridan’s writing. Cole Hauser also acknowledged that the first season was a challenge. Both actors appeared to recognize that something was missing in the way Beth and Rip were being written. And one major change from season 1 may have become so noticeable that Sheridan could be forced to address it from the very first episodes of season 2.

Dutton Ranch was supposed to give Beth Dutton and Rip Wheeler a new beginning, but its first season also created an unexpected problem: the two characters often felt like quieter versions of the people viewers had followed for years on Yellowstone.

That may be about to change.

According to ScreenRant, Taylor Sheridan is expected to become more involved in the creative process for Dutton Ranch season 2, after taking a largely hands-off role during the first season and serving mainly as an executive producer.

That change matters because the first season’s biggest weakness may not have been its story alone. It may have been the absence of the creative voice that originally defined Beth and Rip.

The spinoff premiered on Paramount+ in May 2026 and followed Beth, played by Kelly Reilly, and Rip, played by Cole Hauser, as they left Montana and started their own ranch in Rio Paloma, Texas.

The setup was different from Yellowstone.

Instead of belonging to the most powerful family in the region, Beth and Rip became underdogs. They were forced to deal with devastating setbacks, a troubled adopted teenage son, and a formidable rival whose secrets threatened what they were trying to build.

That shift gave the show a fresh setting, but it also changed the energy of its lead characters.

Beth appeared more subdued than the woman known for devastating one-liners and confrontational confidence. Rip also seemed less like the brutal, fiercely loyal enforcer who had become one of Yellowstone’s most recognizable figures.

Some of that made sense narratively.

Much of Beth and Rip’s old identity had been built around John Dutton and the constant danger surrounding the Yellowstone ranch. With John gone, peace was suddenly possible.

But peace was not necessarily what fans were tuning in to see.

The first season received largely positive reviews and held an 89 percent Rotten Tomatoes score, yet critics and viewers still seemed to feel that something was missing. The series did not carry the same intensity and emotional weight as Yellowstone.

Sheridan’s absence may have been part of the reason.

Both Reilly and Hauser openly acknowledged how difficult it was to continue these characters without his writing.

Reilly told THR: “I was very uncertain of what this would be without his words. I didn’t know if it was gonna work.”

Hauser similarly admitted: “It certainly was a challenge.”

Those comments reveal that Sheridan’s involvement is not simply about branding.

The actors appear to have built a specific creative rhythm around his dialogue and his understanding of Beth and Rip. Without that voice, they were still playing the same characters, but not necessarily with the same sharpness or emotional force.

Season 2 is also being reshaped behind the scenes.

Chad Feehan, who served as showrunner for season 1, departed before the series premiered following reported clashes involving Sheridan, Reilly, and Hauser.

Benjamin Cavell has replaced him.

That change appears to have been welcomed by the cast.

Hauser said of Cavell: “He’s somebody I trust with my life.”

Reilly described Cavell and longtime Yellowstone and Dutton Ranch executive producer and director Christina Voros as “an A-team.”

Those comments suggest that season 2 may have a more stable creative foundation than the first season.

Reilly has also made clear that she sees room for improvement.

“I feel excited about a season two because I want it to be better. I want it to be great,” she said.

That desire is not limited to the two leads.

Ed Harris, who plays Everett McKinney, publicly expressed disappointment with his season 1 experience. He said he felt “underused and inconsequential” and believed the writers did not fully respond to his concerns.

Harris is contractually required to return for season 2 and has reportedly been told his character will have more to do.

That gives the new creative team another problem to solve.

Sheridan’s return therefore arrives at a moment when Dutton Ranch needs more than stronger dialogue.

The series needs to restore the intensity that made Beth and Rip compelling, improve the use of supporting characters, and create a production environment in which the actors feel more connected to the material.

The fact that Reilly and Hauser have spoken so positively about Cavell gives season 2 an encouraging foundation.

But Sheridan’s involvement may be the most important variable.

He does not necessarily need to turn Dutton Ranch into another version of Yellowstone. The new series has its own location, its own conflicts, and a different power structure.

What it may need instead is the emotional aggression, unpredictability, and moral tension that made Beth and Rip feel dangerous even when they were simply standing in a room.

Season 1 showed that those characters can survive outside Montana.

Season 2 now has to prove that they can still feel like themselves.

Production is expected to begin in early 2027.

And if Sheridan’s return does what the cast clearly hopes it will, the biggest change may not be behind the scenes at all.

It may be visible the moment Beth speaks and Rip stops holding back
