THE HEATED RIVALRY COTTAGE WAS LEFT BEHIND. – Following the massive success of Season 1, the show’s iconic set quickly became the most sought-after property in Hollywood. But just as eager fans were anticipating the screen power couple’s return to the house, the production crew made a drastic call to permanently cut ties with the location. The shocking reason? They caught wind of a disturbing line fans had secretly crossed with the property…

The cottage in Heated Rivalry became one of the most emotionally important places in the series, but its return for Season 2 was never guaranteed.

What looked on screen like a quiet, private refuge for Shane Hollander and Ilya Rozanov became something very different in real life after Season 1 exploded in popularity. The property, owned by Toronto-based doctor Michael Kutryk, suddenly found itself at the center of intense fan attention — so much so that Kutryk seriously considered refusing to let the production come back.

According to Entertainment Weekly, Kutryk admitted that he had to do “a little bit of soul searching” before agreeing to another round of filming.

“I did a little bit of soul searching about allowing them to come back,” he said. “I know they need it, and I realize I [could] be difficult and try to squeeze them, but I [couldn’t] bring myself to do that.”

That hesitation becomes easier to understand when considering what the cottage meant to Kutryk before Heated Rivalry existed.

For him, it was not a television set. It was a personal retreat in Muskoka, Ontario, a place he had built specifically to escape the outside world. But after the show used it as the centerpiece of the Season 1 finale, titled “The Cottage,” the property effectively became part of the fandom.

In the series, the cottage is Shane’s off-season private retreat. More importantly, it is where Shane, played by Hudson Williams, and Ilya, played by Connor Storrie, finally confess their feelings and begin making plans for a future together.

That made the location far more than background scenery.

It also became forever tied to one of Ilya’s most memorable lines:

“I’m coming to the cottage.”

Once the episode aired, Kutryk said the reaction was overwhelming.

“Once the episode aired, it was psychotic,” he recalled.

Someone even joked that Heated Rivalry had three stars: Shane, Ilya and the cottage.

That line captures exactly what happened. A private home had become a character in the eyes of fans.

The problem is that fictional importance can create very real consequences.

Kutryk described a number of invasive interactions after the show became popular. Some people reportedly sat in boats for hours taking photos of the property. Others went down his driveway onto private land to take pictures. Some even knocked on his door and asked if they could come inside.

Kutryk did not respond with anger.

“It’s not ideal but, I get it, I guess,” he said. “It means a lot to people.”

That response is unusually generous, especially considering that the cottage was never intended to become a tourist attraction.

Still, the attention made him understandably nervous about what would happen after Season 2.

If the show’s popularity had already transformed his retreat after one season, a second season could amplify everything.

That is why his decision to let the production return matters.

Kutryk could have refused. He could also have used the cottage’s new cultural value to demand far more money.

He did neither.

“When they called, they said, ‘How much do you want?’ First, I told them they scratched my table, then I named a very reasonable price,” he said.

The production was apparently surprised by how reasonable he was.

“They were shocked and appreciative. I actually didn’t even get them to replace my table.”

There is something revealing in that exchange.

The cottage had become valuable precisely because the show made it famous, yet Kutryk did not seem interested in exploiting that fame as aggressively as he could have.

He also appreciated how the series portrayed the property.

Rather than presenting it as an exaggerated luxury home, Heated Rivalry showed it as small, modest and realistic.

“I was amazed they highlighted the cottage in all of its non-expansiveness — that it’s not huge or grand or sprawling,” Kutryk said.

He even pointed out that the show acknowledged only one bedroom had an en suite bathroom.

“They actually show it’s not a mansion. It’s just my little home.”

That authenticity may be part of why the location resonated so strongly.

The cottage feels intimate because it is intimate. It works for Shane and Ilya precisely because it does not look like a spectacular celebrity escape. It feels private, personal and removed from the outside pressure surrounding their relationship.

Ironically, the real-world success of that feeling destroyed some of the privacy that made the place special in the first place.

Kutryk eventually began renting the cottage through Airbnb in February. He said he initially refused the idea, but later accepted after receiving a sufficiently high financial offer.

Even that arrangement may not last forever.

Asked whether the property would still be available after Season 2 arrives in 2027, Kutryk was uncertain.

“We’ll see after Season 2 airs what demand is like,” he said.

Then he returned to the deeper issue.

“I’m a private guy. This is my retreat. I built this to get away from the world, so I don’t know how much longer I’ll continue to share it.”

That may be the real tension surrounding the cottage now.

For fans, it represents Shane and Ilya’s emotional future.

For Kutryk, it represents the exact opposite: a place meant to separate him from public attention.

Season 2 will continue Shane and Ilya’s story three years after the events of Heated Rivalry, adapting Rachel Reid’s The Long Game, the sixth book in the Game Changers series. Ilya will now be playing for the Ottawa Centaurs, bringing him to Canada and physically closer to Shane as they continue navigating their secret relationship.

The new season is expected in spring 2027.

The cottage will be there.

But after everything that has happened around it, that may be less permanent than fans think.

The strange irony is that the more important the cottage becomes to Heated Rivalry, the harder it may become for its real owner to keep sharing it.
