1. Staring Down the Barrel of a Gun

Zachariah’s mysterious history became terrifyingly clear when a grieving mother named Anna (played by Hollywood rockstar Dale Dickey) stormed the ranch with a loaded gun, ready to end Zachariah’s life for what he did to her daughter, Theresa.

While Rip successfully stepped in to diffuse the life-or-death situation, the most jarring part of the encounter was Zachariah’s reaction: he was entirely willing to take the bullet and die.

For actor Marc Menchaca, getting to share such a high-stakes sequence with Dickey was an absolute dream. “Dale Dickey is a rockstar. So getting to work with her, she was amazing,” Menchaca revealed to PEOPLE, admitting he didn’t know the full weight of his character’s brutal backstory until right before filming began.

2. The Heartbreaking Campfire Truth: “Everybody Thought I Was the Devil”

The true emotional peak of the episode occurred later that night around the quiet glow of a ranch campfire. When Rip demanded an explanation, Zachariah broke down, confessing that his prison sentence was the result of a tragic, alcohol-fueled accident that took the life of his lover, Theresa.

• Blinded by Hurt: “We got in an argument. I was drunk. I was blinded by hurt,” Zachariah confessed. “I tried to run away. Threw my truck in reverse.”

• The Weight of Guilt: The town took Theresa’s death incredibly hard, branding Zachariah an outcast. “It was an accident that don’t really feel like an accident,” he admitted to Rip. “Makes you wonder if some things are unforgivable. Everybody thought I was the devil. I did, too.”

• Touching Rip’s Heart: For Menchaca, filming the vulnerable scene with Cole Hauser was an unexpected highlight. “You don’t ever really expect to be vulnerable with Rip,” the Ozark star unmasked. “And I think that was kind of the first moment that was like, two boys can touch each other’s hearts for a second.”

3. A Texan Entering the Taylor Sheridan Universe

Though Menchaca admits he hadn’t watched Yellowstone in its entirety before landing the gig, he had been trying to break into the Taylor Sheridan universe for years through casting director John Papsidera.

As a native Texan, Menchaca found the new spinoff to be a perfect personal fit. With Beth and Rip leaving Montana behind to establish their new empire in the Lone Star State, Menchaca welcomed the opportunity to bring some authentic Texas grit to the screen.
