Fans have been quietly complaining about one of the show’s biggest and most frustrating plot holes: Beth gets pulled over constantly, while Rip Wheeler never gets stopped for a single traffic violation.

We all know Rip Wheeler doesn’t “exist” in real life. He has no official last name, no driver’s license, and no record of ever being pulled over in more than a decade of on-screen time. Yet the moment Beth steps behind the wheel of any truck, the police are right there waiting.

This isn’t a small oversight. It’s a glaring double standard that breaks the show’s own rules and makes the world feel unrealistic.

The inconsistency is everywhere and it’s obvious

In real life, every adult driver — even a man who has never been caught speeding or running a red light — is required to carry a valid driver’s license. Period.

So why does the show treat Beth like she’s the only responsible person on the road while giving Rip a complete free pass?

• Beth gets pulled over for expired tags, “suspicious” driving, speeding, or simply because the plot needs tension.
• Rip? Nothing. Not once. Not even when he’s hauling illegal livestock, running from cartel enforcers, or speeding through the Montana backroads in the early seasons.

It feels like the writers are telling us: “Beth has to prove she’s a law-abiding citizen… but Rip is above the law.”

This makes Beth look weak and Rip look untouchable

This small detail is one of the many things that’s starting to make Dutton Ranch feel tired and sloppy.

Beth has always been the emotional core of the show — the one who breaks down, cries, self-harms, and fights back. The constant traffic stops reinforce that image of her as someone who’s trying to play by the rules while the world is falling apart. But for Rip? He’s the fixer, the man who breaks the law so the family can survive. The show wants us to see him as above the rules — untouchable, unstoppable.

The problem is, it’s completely unrealistic. And it makes the show feel like it’s picking and choosing which character has to follow the law.

This is just one more sign the show is losing its way

Let’s be honest. Dutton Ranch started with a bang — the Jacksons tearing each other apart, the mystery of the 10-Petal Ranch, the cartel hints, the sudden shift from Montana to Texas. But as the season has gone on, it’s started to wander.

Carter’s dragged-out love life with Oreana, Joaquin’s confusing pivot from semi-villain to sympathetic son, the rushed cartel reveal in the finale… and now this little traffic stop inconsistency.

Beth and Rip are still the reason most people are still watching. Their chemistry is pure gold. But when the show starts making these small, obvious mistakes, it makes everything feel less epic and less believable.

The good news is that Season 2 has already been renewed (announced June 24). If the new showrunner actually cares about fixing these little things — giving Rip a real last name, making him pull over once in a while, or at least changing the dynamic so they drive the same truck together — the show could feel fresh again.

Until then, I’m still here for Beth and Rip. Their scenes are the only ones that actually make me believe this world could last for years.

But this little detail? It’s one of those moments that makes you wonder if the writers are just not paying attention anymore.

The show started strong. It had momentum. Now it feels like it’s losing its edge one small inconsistency at a time.
