Kelly Reilly has admitted that one storyline from the Yellowstone universe still nags at her: the silence between the Duttons and Kayce after Monica’s death on Marshals.

The actress, who plays Beth and produces Dutton Ranch alongside Cole Hauser’s Rip Wheeler, called it plainly a “missed opportunity.” She’s been thinking about it a lot, and she believes Season 2 is the perfect chance to finally address it.

With Taylor Sheridan stepping back into the writers’ room and Benjamin Cavell now at the showrunner helm in place of Chad Feehan, the door is wide open for Beth and Rip to finally reckon with what they left unsaid.

When Dutton Ranch premiered on May 15, 2026, Kelly Reilly and Cole Hauser reprised Beth Dutton and Rip Wheeler. Both actors serve as executive producers on the Yellowstone spinoff, which delivered the most-watched series premiere in Paramount+ history with its first two episodes and closed its first season on a cliffhanger.

For the first time, Taylor Sheridan was not part of the writers’ room shaping Beth’s dialogue, though he remained an executive producer. Reilly told The Hollywood Reporter the adjustment shook her. “I was very uncertain of what this would be without his words. I didn’t know if it was gonna work. I didn’t know if she was going to work,” she said, before landing on a striking image: “It was like a part of the character had to die in order for me to begin her again.”

The distance may shrink next season. “I think Taylor is going to be involved as far as some story ideas, which is great,” Reilly said of the season 2 plans.

Monica Dutton (Kelsey Asbille) was killed off-screen on Marshals, the CBS spinoff starring Luke Grimes as Kayce Dutton, a choice reportedly tied in part to a Paramount and NBCUniversal streaming-rights dispute. Viewers wondered why Beth and Rip never checked on Kayce, an absence Reilly has called a missed opportunity.

Speaking to TV Insider, she offered an in-world explanation: “I imagine Beth and Rip had gone to Monica’s [funeral]. There has been some connection, and our story started after that.” She also suggested season 2 could revisit the moment, saying the show can “go back and go, ‘Okay, we can do this one differently. We can make this better.’”

Paramount+ has renewed the series, with Benjamin Cavell stepping in as the new showrunner. In a July 9, 2026 interview, Reilly said fans have real influence over which Yellowstone alumni return, pointing to characters like Jennifer Landon’s Teeter: if fans want them back, they just have to speak up.

Season 1 already proved the show could attract major names, with Annette Bening and Ed Harris joining the cast alongside Finn Little, back as Beth and Rip’s adopted son Carter. A premiere date for season 2 has yet to be announced.

And Kelly Reilly’s hope for Kayce is simple but powerful: if fans truly want him back on the ranch, they have to speak up.
