Cole Hauser admits Taylor Sheridan’s absence from writers’ room created ‘challenges’ on ‘Dutton Ranch’.
Cole Hauser is giving fans a rare glimpse behind the scenes of Dutton Ranch — and it wasn’t all smooth riding.
The actor, who reprises his fan-favorite role as Rip Wheeler in the Yellowstone spin-off, has acknowledged the significant challenges the cast faced after franchise creator Taylor Sheridan stepped away from the show’s writers’ room during Season 1.
“There were challenges, you know?” Hauser told Film Inside NYC. “Not having Taylor [Sheridan] there, for us to really kind of be able to work with these new writers, these new directors, these people… Everything had changed.”
Hauser plays Rip Wheeler, the stoic and powerful foreman who has become one of the most iconic characters in the entire Yellowstone universe. While the show has been a massive success and a continuation of the original series, Hauser has been candid about the transition.
The New Creative Direction
While Taylor Sheridan remained on board as an executive producer, day-to-day creative duties shifted to showrunner Chad Feehan and an entirely new writing staff. Dutton Ranch marked the first series in the Yellowstone universe not to be written by Sheridan himself.
For Hauser, the transition was not seamless. He described the experience as a “challenge” that required the cast to adapt quickly to unfamiliar creative partners.
“The only… normality that we had whatsoever was Carter [played by Finn Little], Christina [director Alexandra Voros], … Kelly and myself,” he added. “Dutton Ranch, which wrapped its first season earlier this month, marked the first series in the ‘Yellowstone’ universe not to be written by Sheridan.”
The Cast’s Focus on Adaptation
Hauser emphasized that rather than dwelling on the expectations surrounding one of television’s biggest franchises, the cast focused on finding its footing with an unfamiliar creative team.
“It was about putting my head down and working my a– off with… what I had around me. The writers that we had, the new writers that we had, that we had to figure out on our feet how to really perform and tell a story. So, I’m proud of what we accomplished, and I look forward to doing it again.”
A Veteran Actor’s Perspective
Hauser, who has been a part of the Yellowstone family since the original series began, brought years of experience and gravitas to the role of Rip Wheeler. His comments come after speculation surrounding the show’s creative direction following Sheridan’s reduced involvement.
The Oscar-nominated actor, known for roles in Apollo 13, The Hangover, and Succession, has always been known for speaking his mind. In this interview, he came across as both honest and reflective about the challenges of the spin-off.
While Hauser has not spoken publicly about leaving the show, he has expressed pride in what the cast accomplished in Season 1 despite the significant changes. He made it clear that he is looking forward to returning for Season 2, which is currently in production.
The Dutton Ranch series premiere aired on Paramount+ on May 15, 2026, and has been a major success for the franchise. Hauser’s comments provide a rare look at the behind-the-scenes reality of bringing the Dutton legacy to new audiences.
