Dutton Ranch is already looking ahead to its second season, but star Cole Hauser has offered a candid look at just how demanding the first season proved to be for the cast and crew. By the time cameras wrapped on the final episode, the entire company was more than ready for an extended break.

Speaking to People, Hauser—who reprises his role as Rip Wheeler in the Yellowstone spin-off—described the collective exhaustion that set in as production reached its end. “I think everybody at the very end of episode 9 was ready to take a breather, go home, rest up and get ready for this next year,” he said. The long shoot, which stretched across roughly nine months, left many feeling drained. “I think it was the end of the nine months of work, so I think I was a bit wiped out. The cast and crew were wiped out.”

Weather Extremes Added to the Challenge

Hauser pointed to the unpredictable and often extreme weather as one of the biggest factors that made the season especially difficult. Filming took the company through intense heat, freezing temperatures, and even ice storms. “We went through a lot of weather issues with the heat, then the freezing cold, and there were ice storms. It was just nuts,” he recalled.

Those conditions are familiar territory for anyone who has worked on a Taylor Sheridan-produced series, where outdoor locations and authentic ranch settings are central to the storytelling. Still, the combination of a lengthy production schedule and rapidly shifting weather tested everyone’s endurance.

A Rewarding Finish Despite the Strain

Despite the physical and mental toll, Hauser emphasized that the finished product made the effort worthwhile. “All in all, I think the whole season was tough, but it was very rewarding in the end,” he said. “The audience loved it. The critics loved it. I can’t wait to continue to make Dutton Ranch as good as it can be.”

The series debuted to strong viewership numbers and generally positive critical response, quickly establishing itself as one of the more successful Yellowstone spin-offs. Hauser’s comments suggest that the cast and creative team recognize both the achievement of Season 1 and the need to approach the next chapter with renewed energy.

Looking Toward Season 2

Production on the second season is moving forward, though Paramount+ has not yet announced an official release date. Early reports have indicated that Season 2 will include some significant cast changes, with at least two exits already confirmed.
