The success of Dutton Ranch is turning the set into a powder keg of egos, rivalries, and power struggles. According to multiple insiders, the show’s biggest names are clashing over camera time, influence, and who gets to be considered the “top dog” on the production.
While the franchise has built a massive loyal audience, the pressure of carrying on Yellowstone’s legacy is reportedly creating friction that has some of the biggest names on set feeling sidelined.
The Fight Over Visibility and Influence
Sources speaking to the Daily Mail describe the production as “a mess of a show” and “high drama” with “so much tension.” One insider bluntly stated: “I believe it’s the actors that are a huge part of the problem. Too many people think they are in control over there and that’s causing a lot of issues.”
The tension appears centered on screen time, control, and who is considered the “top dog” within the ensemble. Another source added that disagreements have focused on “camera time, control” and who gets to be the dominant force on the show.
Annette Bening: The Most Influential Force
Annette Bening, who plays Beulah Jackson, has reportedly emerged as one of the strongest personalities on set. The actress is said to have significant influence and is particularly effective at advocating for herself.
“Annette usually gets her way as she is very clever and persuasive,” one source claimed. “She is savvy about how sets work and knows how to get what she wants.”
Bening is said to want additional scenes with Kelly Reilly, who plays Beth Dutton. Their chemistry is reportedly seen as something that could further benefit the show, and Bening is viewed as a hardworking, team-oriented woman who has successfully carved out her place within the production.
Ed Harris’ Public Frustration Leads to More Screen Time
The most vocal tension has come from Ed Harris, who plays veterinarian Everett McKinney. The 75-year-old actor previously expressed disappointment with the amount of material he received, claiming in a Variety interview that he was “really pissed off” and told his agent to “get me the f–ck out of here” after feeling misled about his role.
Harris claimed he was initially promised more substantial material and that a scene he had invested in — a tender bar performance — was cut. He said he was “f–k you people” after his concerns were ignored.
Despite the public drama, the showrunner is reportedly giving Harris more screen time to “shut him up.” A source told the Daily Mail: “Ed Harris will remain on the show and his role will get even bigger… He is getting more time even though he pissed Taylor Sheridan off with his comments. But Taylor does what he says he is going to do; a promise is a promise.”
The insider added that Harris “made himself look like he has a really big ego, which he obviously does,” but praised his talent: “He can be prickly. But he’s great on screen, so there’s that.”
A Showrunner Change and New Season Ahead
Dutton Ranch Season 2 is already looking different behind the scenes. The show recently underwent a major shakeup when Benjamin Cavell (known for Justified and SEAL Team) took over as showrunner from Chad Feehan. Reports suggested Feehan struggled with the high-profile cast, and the change came after his departure.
While the core cast is expected to remain the same — Kelly Reilly as Beth Dutton, Cole Hauser as Rip Wheeler, Annette Bening as Beulah Jackson, and Ed Harris as Everett McKinney — the future of the series remains uncertain.
Beth and Rip’s Story Will Drive Season 2
The biggest reason viewers are anticipating Season 2 is the unfinished storyline of Beth and Rip. The nine-episode season ended with their adopted son Carter being kidnapped and Beth receiving a threatening call from Mariano, setting up potentially dangerous confrontations in the next installment.
The finale also left questions surrounding Rob-Will’s death and the future of Beulah Jackson’s 10 Petal operation.
Paramount+ renewed the series on June 24, before Season 1 had even finished airing, following its record-breaking debut. There is currently no official Season 2 premiere date, but production is expected to begin in 2027, with early reports pointing toward a possible late-2027 or early-2028 return.
Whether the tension between the stars will intensify or whether Sheridan’s promise to give Harris more screen time will smooth things over remains to be seen. But one thing is clear: Dutton Ranch is no longer just a spin-off — it’s its own show with its own cast, its own drama, and its own fight for screen time.
The Dutton Ranch is still standing, but the real drama may be happening behind the scenes.
