Ed Harris does not sound satisfied with his role on Dutton Ranch. At the Monday night premiere of Apple TV’s The Dink, the veteran actor opened up in a rare and candid interview with Variety’s Marc Malkin about how he felt “misled” about the importance of his character in the Yellowstone spin-off, and that halfway through filming Season 1, he was telling his team to “get me the fuck out of here.”

Harris plays Everett McKinney, a good-humored veterinarian in Dutton Ranch. He is currently signed on for two seasons. While he suggested he was ready to walk away from the show, it is unclear if he is actually looking to exit the program.

Spokespeople for Paramount, series creator Taylor Sheridan, and 101 Studios did not immediately respond to Variety’s request for comment.

The Early Expectations vs. Reality on Set

Harris explained that when he was first approached for the role, he was “talked to quite a bit” about what the season would involve and what his character’s arc would be. He said he was explicitly told that Everett McKinney would be one of the four main characters and that his role would have significant weight in the story.

“That wasn’t really the case,” Harris said bluntly. “Prior to signing on for it, I was talked to quite a bit about what the season was, and what my character was going to do — and that I was one of the four main characters.”

During filming, Harris said he felt “underused and inconsequential.” He described it as a frustrating experience, especially because he believed the character was supposed to be far more important to the overall narrative than it ended up being.

“I said, ‘I’m feeling underused and inconsequential,’ and they kind of went, ‘Oh,’” Harris recalled. “I’m being told my character will have a little bit more to do [in Season 2]. I was just a little frustrated, to tell you the truth.”

A Scene That “Really Pissed Him Off”

Harris shared one specific moment that highlighted the disconnect for him. He recalled filming a scene in which his character, Everett, sings in a bar. The moment was supposed to be a highlight, but it was cut from the final episode.

“So there’s this scene in there… I’m talking to [Beth Dutton] at the bar, and [Rip Wheeler] comes in and says, ‘OK, Everett, come on, it’s your turn,’” he said. “I walk up to the mic, and they cut it. They cut the song out. I’m going, ‘Fuck you, people.’”

Harris remembered the production telling him they cut the moment because it was “too ‘up’ for the dark ending of that episode.” He said at the time, he felt like that was “enough reason to say I’m voiding my contract.”

Harris’s Current Status on the Show

Harris remains signed for two seasons of Dutton Ranch. He has not announced his departure, but his comments suggest he is frustrated with how his character has been handled. He said he is “being told my character will have a little bit more to do in Season 2,” but he has not elaborated on what that additional role might involve.

Dutton Ranch launched its series premiere on Paramount+ on May 15, 2026. The show follows Beth Dutton (Kelly Reilly) and Rip Wheeler (Cole Hauser) as they leave Montana to build their own ranch in South Texas. Other cast members include Finn Little, Juan Pablo Raba, Jai Courtney, J.R. Villarreal, Marc Menchaca, Natalie Alyn Lind, and Annette Bening.
