In an exclusive interview, 19-year-old Australian actor Finn Little opens up about Carter’s pain, his growth in the Texas spin-off, and what’s coming next for the character fans have watched mature from a troubled teen into a young man desperate to prove himself.

“To Be Left Out of a Decision Like That Hurt Him Quite a Bit”

Little, who has portrayed Carter since joining the original Yellowstone in Season 4 at just 14 years old, says the betrayal runs deep for his character.

“Carter wants to be taken seriously,” Little told People. “Beth and Rip are, in a way, molding him to try to become the next person to run the ranch. They want him to become a strong young man, a strong cowboy. To be left out of a decision like that, I think, hurt him quite a bit. And that will be a big factor in Carter trying to claim his own independence this season.”

The episode sees Beth and Rip forced to make the heartbreaking call to destroy their cattle to prevent the disease from spreading. Knowing how attached Carter has become to ranch life — and how much he sees it as his future — they choose to protect him by keeping him away during the grim task. Beth later tells Carter she was “protecting” him, but he rejects the explanation.

“Protecting me from what? You want me to be a rancher,” Carter fires back. “My life isn’t yours — and it isn’t f***ing Rip’s.” He then delivers the cutting line: “You’re a liar.”

Little explains that Carter’s anger stems from feeling infantilised. After years of being shaped by Beth and Rip, he’s ready to stand on his own.

Carter’s Evolution in Dutton Ranch

Both Reilly and Hauser have been highly protective of their young co-star, both on and off screen. Hauser has described watching Little grow from a boy into a talented young man as one of the highlights of the experience.

“We’ve been a part of his most formidable years as a young man,” Hauser said. “To see him grow not only off the screen, but on the screen as an actor — he has so much talent, and it’s just oozing out of him.”

Reilly echoed the sentiment: “He’s just grown with us, and we love him.”
