Although the Apple TV+ television adaptation of Margo’s Got Money Troubles has received widespread acclaim for capturing the dark humor and sharp satire of Rufi Thorpe’s 2024 novel of the same name, the brilliant writing team of David E. Kelley and Eva Anderson decided to implement five core changes to better suit the language of visual storytelling.
Susie’s Prior Knowledge of Jinx & Wrestling
In Rufi Thorpe’s book, Jinx and Susie strike up a natural rapport as they help Margo with her burgeoning OnlyFans profile. A wrinkle the show adds is that Thaddea Graham’s Susie knows who Jinx is already before he shows up on Margo’s doorstep and asks them if he can live with them. Their introductions into the show are tied together when Susie watches old videos of Jinx in the ring.

Jinx Confronting Mark – Phone Call vs. In Person
In the book, Jinx does confront Mark about how he handled Margo’s pregnancy, but he does it over the phone. This is what lands him the restraining order in the book, and in episode 6 it looks a little different after he gave Mark a very firm handshake that broke some bones in an in-person confrontation in Mark’s office at Fullerton College.
Margo Does Not Attend Her Mother’s Wedding
In the book, the reveal that Margo is Hungry Ghost on OnlyFans at the party she attends with Becca (Sasha Diamond) gets her banned from Shyanne and Kenny’s wedding in Vegas. The show keeps her involved and holds back her confession to Shyanne that she even participates on the platform until their makeshift Bachelorette party for Margo’s mother the night before the ceremony. Margo is still needed as a witness to their union, so Shyanne can’t ask her not to come.

In the penultimate episode of the series, Michelle Pfeiffer gets so angry at Mark Gable’s mother Elizabeth (Marcia Gay Harden) that she punches her and breaks her jaw. This is not in the book. It does compound the many struggles Margo faces at the end of episode 7, including her father’s relapse.
The most significant departure from the source material is the creation of a brand-new character who does not exist in the novel, serving to expand the world surrounding Margo (played by Elle Fanning) and providing a psychological sounding board as her life spirals out of control. Furthermore, Margo’s venture into the world of OnlyFans—guided by the pro-wrestling logic of her father, Jinx—is streamlined to be much more rapid, visually vibrant, and cinematic, bypassing the book’s highly detailed technical milestones and slower financial grind.
To elevate the dramatic tension to a fever pitch with just one episode remaining, the showrunners brilliantly compressed the timeline into a suffocating bottleneck: they placed Jinx’s heartbreaking relapse right in the penultimate episode. This creates a “perfect storm” alongside her high-stakes psychological evaluation and looming court appearances, making the custody battle over baby Bodhi between Margo and her former professor, Mark (Michael Angarano), feel incredibly dangerous, immediate, and legally complex—a hallmark of David E. Kelley’s legal-thriller expertise that expands upon the slow, internal dread of the book.
Finally, by heavily trimming minor university subplots and prolonged internal monologues, the 2026 screen adaptation delivers a beautifully paced, tight, and gripping experience, leaving both book loyalists and television fans waiting with bated breath to see where Bodhi’s fate ultimately lands in the upcoming season finale.
