The confusion over how old Oreana is on Dutton Ranch has finally been cleared up — and the answer is both funny and important to the story.
In the new Paramount+ Yellowstone spinoff, 26-year-old actress Natalie Alyn Lind plays Oreana Jackson, the fiery granddaughter of ruthless ranch queen Beulah Jackson (Annette Bening) and daughter of Rob-Will Jackson (Jai Courtney). Oreana is in a passionate romance with Carter (Finn Little), Beth and Rip’s adopted son, who is clearly 19 years old.
But fans have been baffled: Oreana looks like she could be in her 30s, and her relationship with a high-schooler just doesn’t add up. Is Oreana supposed to be a teenager too?
Natalie Alyn Lind addressed the confusion head-on in a new People exclusive:
“Everybody keeps on making these references to the fact that they think my character is supposed to be a high school student. A huge part of our storyline is that my character is supposed to be years older than Finn’s. My character is supposed to be 24, and his character’s supposed to be 19.”
Lind, who is currently 26 in real life, found the mix-up hilarious. “I always find it really funny when they’re like, ‘She’s supposed to be playing high school.’ I’m like, no, not really, but you’ll see more about that later.”
The age gap between Oreana (24) and Carter (19) isn’t just a detail — it’s central to their relationship. Oreana has lived a childhood that was “robbed from her” by the turbulent Jackson family environment. Carter, growing up in the Dutton household, brings out a youthful, whimsical side in her that she never got to have.
Lind explained it perfectly: “She is so scared to accept love, and you see Carter maturing into himself and becoming a man… and I think that you’re able to see Oreana go back to that kind of whimsical childhood that she never got — and they bring that out in each other.”
The pair’s romance began in season 1 when Carter rescued Oreana from a dangerous situation at a rodeo. Their connection is complicated by the rival ranches — Oreana is a Jackson, Carter is a Dutton — but the age difference adds layers of tension and tenderness. For Oreana, dating Carter feels like finally getting to be a young woman without the constant danger of her family’s world.
Lind has already said she’s hoping for a second season. With more episodes, there’s room to explore Oreana’s full backstory and how her past has shaped who she is today. Fans are clearly hungry for it.
Oreana is proving to be one of the most compelling new characters in the Taylor Sheridan universe — fiery, complex, and now finally understood by everyone.
So next time you watch Dutton Ranch, remember: Oreana is 24. Carter is 19. And their story is all the more powerful because of it.
