Prime Video has unveiled the first images from Carrie, Mike Flanagan’s highly anticipated eight-part adaptation of Stephen King’s groundbreaking debut novel. Set to premiere this Autumn on the streaming service, the series marks the first time King’s story has been reimagined as an ongoing television drama, allowing Flanagan significantly more room to explore the tormented life of Carrie White, her oppressive home environment, and the relentless cruelties that ultimately push her to the brink.
Summer Howell stars in the titular role as Carrie, having secured the part after an extensive casting search involving more than 1,000 actors. She is joined by Samantha Sloyan (The Pitt) as Carrie’s fiercely protective and deeply religious mother, Margaret White. The story follows the sheltered Carrie, who after the sudden death of her father finds herself thrust into the brutal social ecosystem of public high school. Alongside traditional teenage horrors like bullies and cliques, this version updates the tale for the social media age, as Carrie becomes the target of a viral bullying scandal that spreads rapidly through her community.
Unfortunately for her tormentors, Carrie is also beginning to develop mysterious telekinetic powers. Anyone familiar with King’s 1974 novel knows that combining adolescent rage, relentless cruelty, and the ability to move objects with one’s mind rarely ends peacefully. Across eight episodes, Carrie will expand upon the characters and tensions of the original story, tracing the seemingly small choices that build toward one devastating night. Prime Video describes it as a tale about kindness versus cruelty and whether audiences are witnessing the creation of “a hero, a monster, or something far more complicated.”
The supporting cast features Siena Agudong (Resident Evil) as Sue Snell, Alison Thornton (Fire Country) as Chris Hargensen, Joel Oulette (My Life with the Walter Boys) as Tommy Ross, Josie Totah (The Buccaneers) as Tina, Arthur Conti (Beetlejuice Beetlejuice) as Billy, and Thalia Dudek (The Running Man) as Emaline. They are joined by Amber Midthunder (Prey) as Miss Desjardin and Matthew Lillard (Man of Tomorrow) as Principal Grayle.
The adaptation is helmed by Mike Flanagan, the visionary behind acclaimed series like Midnight Mass, The Haunting of Hill House, and The Fall of the House of Usher. Flanagan serves as writer, showrunner, and executive producer, while also directing four of the eight episodes. Stephen King himself executive produces, with Amazon MGM Studios handling production.
King’s novel launched one of the most successful literary careers in history, with his books selling more than 350 million copies worldwide. The story was famously adapted into Brian De Palma’s 1976 film starring Sissy Spacek, which celebrates its 50th anniversary this year. While Carrie White has appeared on screen several times since then, the expanded episode count gives Flanagan the opportunity to delve much deeper into both Carrie and the people around her. Given his previous work exploring grief, trauma, family dynamics, and supernatural horror, this pairing of creator and source material feels like a perfect fit.
