After nine months of shooting, nonstop weather battles, dangerous wildlife, and an intense production schedule, the entire Dutton Ranch cast and crew were completely wiped out by the time Season 1 wrapped in early 2026.
Speaking to People magazine in August 2026, Cole Hauser — who plays Rip Wheeler in both the original Yellowstone and its spin-off — opened up about just how draining the Texas production had been. The actor didn’t mince words.
“We went through a lot of weather issues with the heat, then the freezing cold, and there were ice storms. It was just nuts,” Hauser said. “Everybody at the very end of episode 9 was ready to take a breather, go home, rest up and get ready for this next year.”

The cast and crew really did need that break. Filming in Texas brought challenges that were far more extreme than what they experienced in Montana. The early weeks were brutal — 100-plus-degree heat that made it almost impossible for Hauser to keep the extra weight he needed to convincingly play Rip. The only relief came when an ice storm shut down production for days.
But Mother Nature wasn’t done. As Hauser and co-star Kelly Reilly revealed during a May 2026 appearance on The Kelly Clarkson Show, the Texas set was also home to one of the most dangerous realities of the job: rattlesnakes.
“We were actually going to go film there at night and got turned away,” Hauser explained. “The lead director found, like, I don’t know, 40 or 50 rattlesnakes.” The crew had to be evacuated and the shoot was delayed while the snakes were relocated.
Despite the heat, the cold, the ice, and the venomous wildlife, the cast and crew pushed through. Hauser has said the season was “very rewarding in the end.” The audience loved it. The critics loved it. And everyone was proud of the final product, even if they were exhausted.
The break was long overdue. After filming wrapped in March 2026, the entire team took time to recharge before the second season began. Cole Hauser and Kelly Reilly both spoke about how much they appreciated the chance to step away and come back refreshed, ready to make Dutton Ranch Season 2 even better.
The Texas production was no easy feat, but it also gave the cast and crew something special. They worked in a vast, rugged landscape that felt true to the Yellowstone world, while facing real dangers and real challenges every single day. That shared experience bonded the team in ways that went far beyond the screen.

Now that Season 2 is in full swing, the cast is back and hungrier than ever. The weather may have changed, but the stories, the characters, and the unbreakable bond between the cast and crew are the same.
Everyone is ready to come back stronger. Everyone is ready to keep Dutton Ranch going. And everyone is ready to take that breather… at least until the next one is over.
The Texas summer may have tried to break them, but it couldn’t break their spirit. And that’s exactly why Dutton Ranch Season 2 is going to be even better than the first.
