SOME SOURCES SUGGEST THAT SCRIPT ADJUSTMENTS HAVE SPARKED CONSIDERABLE INTERNAL DEBATE, RAISING CONCERNS OVER THE DIRECTION OF THE NEW SEASON. Against this backdrop, Dave Annable’s story was unexpectedly brought back into the spotlight, as the actor once shared how desperately he hoped Taylor Sheridan would grant him another role after his Yellowstone character was written off—so much so that he took an unthinkable step to make it happen.

Dave Annable did not know whether Taylor Sheridan would ever call again after Lee Dutton died in the opening hour of Yellowstone. Being written out in episode one of a phenomenon is a strange career beat: the work is over almost before the audience knows your face, and the phone may never ring. Annable has said he was “praying” for another chance. The chance that came was Lioness—and when Sheridan offered it, the actor did not wait for the full pitch.

“I’m in, I’m in, I’m in”

In an interview with TV Insider published in early August, Annable described the second call as the purest professional compliment available. “To get that call, there’s no greater compliment for an actor to have somebody like Taylor call you and ask to work with you again,” he said. “When he presented Lioness to me, before he even said anything, I was like, ‘I’m in, I’m in, I’m in.’”

That reaction makes sense in the Sheridan economy. The writer-producer’s shows have become a floating company of trusted faces; a death on one series is not always an exile from the wider universe. For Annable, it was validation that Lee’s brief, brutal arc had registered with the person who wrote it.

Lee Dutton: a “beautifully awful” exit

Annable played Lee, eldest child of John Dutton (Kevin Costner), on Yellowstone, which ran from 2018 to 2024. Lee is killed in the premiere—a shock that helps set the series’ tone and drives conflict for seasons afterward. Annable later returned in flashbacks, but the character’s living story was essentially over on night one.

He has called that fate “beautifully awful.” Awful for obvious reasons: no long run, no slow burn. Beautiful because the role still gave him something he had not expected to love. “I had no idea how much fun I’d have playing a cowboy,” he said. For a lot of actors, Yellowstone was a costume and a paycheque; for him it was also the discovery of how much he enjoyed the physical and tonal world Sheridan builds around ranch power and family violence.

Neal McNamara: the other half of the war at home

On Lioness Annable plays Dr. Neal McNamara, a pediatric oncology surgeon married to Zoe Saldaña’s Joe McNamara—the CIA officer at the centre of the Paramount+ spy thriller. He has described the part as “a real gift” and the story as important precisely because it stays with the family of people who do clandestine work. “It’s an important story to play a family member of these service members.”

How Dave Annable Predicted His Yellowstone Character's Fate

His reading of the marriage is grounded in time rather than melodrama. He imagines Neal and Joe meeting before their careers fully hardened—him in the long tunnel of medical school, her entering the CIA—and building a foundation strong enough to survive absences and secrets. “I think they met before their prospective careers, and they built this foundation and supported one another… Obviously, Neal was in medical school for a very long time, and she was joining the CIA.”

In his performance logic, the couple made a deliberate pact: “literally in this for the long haul,” no easy exits. Season 3 tests that vow in the most literal way. Joe’s world has already brought violence to the doorstep. “Now, with a few dead bodies on the front lawn, you know maybe that’s going to make a slight right off the exit ramp, but we’ll see,” Annable said. Even so, he ranks the relationship among his favourites on television: “incredibly mature and forward and beautiful.”

From one-episode cowboy to series regular husband

The arc of Annable’s Sheridan experience is a useful footnote to how this franchise machine works. Lee Dutton exists to die and haunt the story; Neal McNamara exists to keep Joe human when the mission cannot. One role is pure catalyst; the other is sustained counterweight—school runs, hospital corridors, the look across a kitchen when the job has followed someone home. Landing the second after the first is not only job security; it is a different kind of trust. Sheridan needed someone who could make domestic partnership feel as high-stakes as an extraction.

Meet Dave Annable, who plays Zoe Saldaña's on-screen husband, Neal, in Lioness | South China Morning Post

Annable has appeared at the Lioness season 3 premiere in New York as part of that ongoing commitment. New episodes continue to land on Sundays on Paramount+.

Why the “praying” line sticks

Actors say polite things about creators every press cycle. What lands here is the vulnerability under the booking: the fear that a day-one death meant the end of the relationship with a writer whose shows define a corner of the industry, and the relief when it did not. Annable got to play the cowboy, then the surgeon; the ranch, then the marriage under operational fire. For viewers who only remember Lee’s body in the premiere, Lioness is the proof that in Sheridan’s world, sometimes the dead still get another life—just not always in a hat.
