Today, August 15, 2026, marks a major milestone for Matthew McConaughey: his new movie The Rivals of Amziah King finally opens in theaters.
After a nearly year-and-a-half wait since its world premiere at the 2025 South by Southwest Film & TV Festival, the film is making its limited theatrical debut today and will expand to more theaters across the United States on August 21.
The neo-Western crime thriller was written and directed by Andrew Patterson. McConaughey stars as the title character, a beekeeper and bluegrass musician in rural Oklahoma who reunites with his estranged former foster child, Kateri (Angelina LookingGlass), and becomes her mentor. The story follows Amziah as his family business is threatened by rivals, forcing him to protect what he has built while navigating the complicated return of someone from his past.
